  • In 1944, a Polish-Jewish lawyer named Raphael Lemkin (1900-1959) sought to describe Nazi policies of systematic murder, including the destruction of the European Jews. He formed the word "genocide" by combining geno-, from the Greek word for race or tribe, with -cide, from the Latin word for killing.
  • Northern Sudanese Muslims attacked southern Sudanese because of their Christian beliefs and oil property
  • Sudan is east of Ethiopia where many of the refugees escaped too
  • About 4 million people fled their homes since the conflict began
  • When they were attacked everyone fled the area in a rush so children were split up from their families
  • On January 9, 2005, the Sudanese government signed a deal with southern rebels to end the country's 22 year-long civil war.
  • The UN and hundreds of other support groups begin to help Sudan recover from their devastation.
  • George Clooney is the most persuasive voice for the independence of Sudan over the issue of independence of southern Sudan from the north
  • Happy Sudanese people first day of freedom in 21 years.
