  • 1. The Blue-billed Duck The NZ Blue-billed Duck is extinct. Its scientific name is Oxyura austalis which is latin for southern pointed tail. It is extinct because it nested on the ground, there were not many of them and they were also powerless to attacks from rats. They lived in wetlands and ate both plants and small animals like insects and grubs. They were also good to eat and Maori used their feathers for cloaks. The Blue-billed ducks were named that because they had a blue bill or beak. By Abby Horne
