Ashleigh and paige cay

Editor's Notes

  1. On the island of Ćuracao in the Southern Caribbean Phillip Enright and his family live in Willemstad. But the Nazi war is raging and Phillip and his mother must leave for Norfolk on the S.S Hato to escape the German war.
  2. An unfortunate event occurred shortly after departing on the S.S Hato. At three o’clock in the morning, on the sixth of April 1942 , she was torpedoed by a German submarine. When departing off the Hato Phillip was hit with flying debris and was knocked out.
  3. When Phillip came to, he was on a raft drifting through the ocean. As he sat up, he heard a voice saying “ Young bahss how you feelin?” He looked and saw a very old, very huge Negro. He looked for his mother but she was not in sight. All that was with him was the Negro and a very fat gray cat. Phillip asked the man what his name and in reply he said “ My own self? Timothy!”
  4. After about 3 days on the raft Phillip awoke, to find what seemed like a haze and as he looked to the horizon the red fiery ball of sun was dim. Phillip lay down moaning, the pain in his head unbearable. Timothy tore off some of his shirt and put it over Phillips eyes. When Phillip next roused everything was dark. Phillip was blind.
  5. Timothy spotted the island about 2 miles away. Phillip had second thoughts about the island but after what seemed like hours, they arrived on the Cay. During that first afternoon on the Cay Timothy was very busy and did not talk much for he made a hut for them to shelter in as well as fishing for langosta.
  6. After several days on the Cay Phillip and Timothy realized that to survive they need to rely on each other and make everyday needs out of basic materials on the cay to insure rescue from the island and keep them safe and comfortable. Timothy made most of the resources such as a hut to shelter them, a catchment to provide water for them, a signal fire and a HELP sign incase an aircraft flies by and also he caught the fish for food. Timothy has contributed the most due to Phillips blindness.
  7. One morning in early May Phillip woke to Timothy’s harsh great breaths. Phillip asked if Timothy was okay he replied in words Phillip did not understand, but soon got Fever! Malaria! Phillip reached over and felt Timothy’s head, it was burning hot. Phillip went and fetched some water and gave it to Timothy. Phillip then ripped a piece of what was left of his shirt, dampened it and put it on Timothy’s head. “ Dat be good” he had murmured but suddenly he was shivering, Phillip could hear his teeth clacking. Phillip thought it was about 10 0’clock when Timothy began to mumble and laugh, being delusional. The little bursts of laughter in between wheezes that Phillip heard were very high and strange. At noontime Timothy got even worse, trying to get to his feet with Phillip yelling at him to sit back down, but Timothy threw him aside as if he wasn’t there and ran out of the hut and down the hill his delusional laughter echoing behind him. Phillip followed the sound of laughter and heard a splash- Timothy had gone into the water. Phillip screamed his name but there was no answer, Phillip waded in to his knees and fell over Timothy’s body. He pulled him out and put him on the sand. Once Timothy’s fever had gone Phillip helped him up the hill. Timothy never really got better.
  8. On a very hot morning in July, Timothy and Phillip were on the reef. Timothy had just brought some calico scallops ashore when they both heard the sound of a rifle shot. Timothy came quickly to Phillip’s side and said “ Dat be trouble”. Phillip was completely confused. Timothy explained to Phillip that that was the sound of the sea and that a tempest or hurricane was on its way. Timothy immediately started to prepare for the weather ahead. He started by lashing the water keg high up on a palm trunk. He then took the remaining rope and tied it securely around the same tree. Timothy told Phillip just incase the tempest reached this high lock your arms over the rope and hang on Phillip.
  9. The tempest started well after dark. The first drops of rain hit the hut and was accompanied by howling wind. They could hear the surf beginning to crash on the sand. The rain then started lashing into the hut. A moment later there was a splintering sound and the hut blew away. Timothy dropped down beside Phillip covering Phillip’s body with his, yelling at Phillip to keep his head down. They stayed flat on the ground for almost two hours, barely able to breathe. Timothy shouted to go to the palm. They clung to the palm until the wind died down and the rain became gentle. The first half of the storm had past they were now in the middle of the hurricane.
  10. 20 – 30 minutes later the full fury of the next half of the storm hit Phillip and Timothy. Timothy pressed Phillip tightly to the palms bark. It was even worse this time round and Phillip did not remember everything that happened. After awhile a wave that must of reached half way up the palm crashed against them. The water went way over Phillips head as he choked and struggled to breath. Another wave hit them and they both lost consciousness. When Phillip came to the storm was over. He told Timothy to wake up, he did not answer. But Phillip knew that he was still alive. Phillip untied him and Timothy went to sleep, Phillip did as well. When Philip next awoke Timothy never did because old timothy of Charlotte Amalie was dead.
  11. In the afternoon Phillip dug a grave for Timothy. At first he was angry at him for leaving but he then realized Timothy had died for him. Phillip wanted to keep going and make himself a hut, to clear off the debris. Stew Cat was constantly around and Phillip stumbled over him a couple of times. There was so much to do he had to get a camp fire going, pile wood for a signal fire, weave palm fibers to sleep on, make a catchment, fish on the reef and see if any coconuts were left. Phillip didn’t know if he could do it all himself but he decided to carry on Timothy’s legacy and keep going.
  12. At about noon Phillip heard a bell, he thought he was dreaming. But then he heard a slow chugging of an engine and voices. He yelled that he was there on the cay and a mans voice said that they saw him. Someone came out onto the island and took him to the boat. He remembered Timothy’s knife and asked a sailor to go and get it as it was the last thing Timothy had and the only thing that Phillip wanted off the cay. The other sailor asked him questions. The next morning they docked at the naval base in Cristobal, Panama and Phillip was rushed off to hospital. Phillip’s mother and father flew from Willemstad to see him.
  13. 4 Months later at a hospital in New York, after many x – rays and tests Phillip had the first of his three operations. When he got hit with debris when departing from the Hato it had damaged some nerves. But after the third operation when the bandages came off he could see again but he still had to wear glasses for life. Some day Phillip will charter a schooner out of Panama and explore Devils mouth. When he finds Timothy’s grave he would say “Dis b’dat outrageous cay eh Timothy?”
