    • Prevention project first started in Antwerp in 2004 (“Tram 12”)
    • Project to reduce large and small conflicts and nuisance on public transport
    • Secondary school scholars often seen as cause of this nuisance
    • Project developed by vzw Doedèskadèn in cooperation with De Lijn
    • Part of the safety & security plan of De Lijn (‘Safe Journey’)
    • Today: all provinces in Flanders, several cities
  • 4. Objective of Trammelant 9/12/2011 Connecting Youth with Society
    • General satisfaction of all stakeholders using public transportation
    • Decrease of feelings of unsafety
    • Enhancing mutual understanding and respect between personnel of De Lijn and youngsters
    • Supporting preventive actions: intervene before problems grow
    • Initiation of best practices in cooperation with local government, schools and other youth organizations
  • 5. Vision of Trammelant 9/12/2011 Connecting Youth with Society
    • We approach youngsters as they are , NOT as some of them sometimes behave
    • Start from the own childhood: presenting adults also as youth scholars
    • No pedantic sermons or warnings, BUT dialogues
    • Experiential aim: to experience the effects of the own behavior onto someone else
    • Experiences of both parties are important
    • Participation is the key
  • 6. Who can participate? 9/12/2011 Connecting Youth with Society
    • Selection of 15 schools/year/province
    • Selection based on results of Security monitoring system of De Lijn  includes nuisance and incident reports
    • Also strategically based selections in cooperation with local partners
    • In each school: one class selected = representative for the use of public transport (majority of the class)
    • Aim: 14 – 16 years
  • 7. European involvement: EU CIVITAS-ELAN 9/12/2011 Connecting Youth with Society
    • European funding for sustainable mobility
    • One of the measures in cooperating city (Gent) = related to safer public transport
    • Idea for upgrading the Trammelant-project
    • Multifunctional bus equipped with didactical materials
    • Launched in November 2009
    • Today: 5 buses

    • Cost price game: damaged parts have to be tagged with the correct price for repair

    • Presentation possibilities : beamer, screen and blindfolds inside the bus

    • Basket ring: when the bus visits the school, youngsters can aim a basketball towards the ring instead of aiming at the driver or controller

    • Pictures of past Trammelant activities: the interior of the bus is decorated with pictures of classes that have participated in the project

    • Smoke generator: to simulate evacuation circumstances, a generator fogs 1100m³/minute to evacuate the vehicle  importance of clearing aisles

      • Use of placemat methodology
      • Discussing small annoyances on public transport
      • Finding empathy in each others’ roles

    • Third activity: school visit
      • Basis = peer-to-peer tutoring
      • The youngsters teach their fellow students scholars what they have learnt from the past two activities

    • Less reports of nuisance
    • Mutual respect between personnel & youngsters
    • Personnel experiences that the company is doing something to reduce nuisance
    • Refreshment of do’s and don’ts on public transport
    • Long-term effects:
      • Personnel involved in Trammelant keep on driving the buses to the participating schools
      • Other campaign about behaviour become recognizable
