  • 9. ECONOMY, CONSUMPTION AND RETAIL Australian Forecasts GPD THE IMF foresees Australian GDP to only contract by .5% rather then by 1.4% it had forecast in April 2009. It has also increased its outlook for 2010 to 1.5% GDP growth compared to .6% in April. Consumption Due to ‘unusual circumstances’ ie Government Stimulus and the GFC, it may be some time before underlying spending behaviour can be accurately estimated. The Australian Bureau of Statistics retail trend and forecast series has therefore been suspended (as of November 2008). Trending and forecasting will be reintroduced when more certainty emerges in the underlying trend in retail turnover. 9
  • 10. ECONOMY, CONSUMPTION AND RETAIL Implications  Despite the current economic climate, Australian retail revenue is expected to grow annually to 2014 (IBISWorld, 2009) and research points to increased consumer confidence going forward.  Growth is not expected to continue as strongly as it has in recent years.  As a result, a key focus for the retail sector in the immediate future will likely be increasing profit margins.  Retailers are expected to focus on improved logistics and distribution management, increasing economies of scale, work force productivity and investment in improved technologies.  Another key are identified for improvement is increased investment in business and customer intelligence such as data collection in an attempt to deliver on customer expectation. 10
