  • 2. Learning outcomes.
    • To gain an understanding of the Effects of exercise on the respiratory system.
    • To discover short term effects and long term effects of exercise on the respiratory system for task 2 of assignment.

    • Take a few minutes and write down the effects that exercise will have on your lungs (both long term and short term)
  • 4. Short term effects of exercise.
    • Short term effects of exercise are the body's reaction to exercise immediately after starting until the end of a cool down period.
  • 5. Short term effects of exercise
    • Immediate increase in the rate and depth of breathing .
    • More oxygen to the lungs/more waste product.
    • Increases in the tidal volume.
  • 6. What is Tidal Volume?
    • The Tidal Volume in the lungs is the amount (volume) of air inhaled and exhaled with each normal breath.

    • The long term effects are improvements which occur over weeks, months and years from regular exercising or training.

    • Regular exercise results in:-
    • Respiratory rate lowered at rest and during exercise.
    • Increased lung volume and efficiency
    • Increase in the capillary blood supply to the lungs.

    • We can now understand the mechanics of breathing and how it is done.
