      • International Tourist Arrivals was totaled 642 million between January and August 2010, expecting to increase in the range of 5%-6% over the full year.

      • Out of a global total of 880 million tourists in 2009, India was ranked at 41 st place, still a long way to be among top 10 destinations in the world.

    • Foreign tourist arrivals jumped to 2.6 million between January-June 2010 compared to 2.4 million in January-June in 2009.
    • There is a need to offer unique experience to international tourists.
    • International tourists are used to booking their stay online. They have to depend on local travel agents to find a place to stay.

      • India’s performance in tourism sector has been quite impressive over this decade.
    6.1 Foreign Tourist expected between July-December 2010
  • 5. Key Tourist Destinations
    • The demand for travel and tourism in India is expected to grow by 8.2% between 2010 and 2019 and will place India at the third position in the world.
    • India is projected to become the fifth fastest growing business travel destination from 2010-2019 with an estimated real growth rate of 7.6%.
    • The top 10 states in terms of number of foreign tourist visits (2009) :
    • Top 3 : Tamil Nadu: 2.37 million; Maharashtra: 2 million; Delhi: 1.96 million
    • Remaining : Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Bihar and Himachal Pradesh.

      • North East and Central India is still unexplored area.

    • Most of the domestic travelers look for cost effective stay options at vacation destinations
      • Major tourists fight for reserving State Tourism owned properties e.g. MTDC, GTDC, HTDC, KTDC, TTDC
    • Currently, booking through online is not very prevalent among domestic travelers and find anything that is available at random

      • Describing domestic tourism is the “backbone” of India Tourism Industry.
  • 7. Key Tourist Destinations
    • Owning to fast economic growth, domestic tourism industry also facing challenge from outbound travel market.
      • Most of the outbound travelers spend large money compared to domestic travelers.
    • The contribution of top 10 States was about 88% to the total number of domestic tourist visits during 2009.

      • Outbound travel from India has increased from 3.5 million in 2000, to 7.8 million in 2009.

      • Some other tourism categories wellness, Spiritual, Heritage, Rural and Beach Tourism is also catching up very fast.
  • 9. Online Booking in India
    • 85% of users in India intends to make online purchases over the next 6 months.
    • Low internet penetration and lack of confidence in using credit card credentials are still the key hindrance for online shopping in India.
      • With the advent of travel sites, the numbers of users using online booking system are increasing.
