    • Week 1 Assignment Written Communication Exercises  Write a 250- to 500-word response to each of the following three exercises, 750 to 1500 words total. Reference this week‟s readings to formulate your responses. • Exercise 1: Consider a research paper you have written. Describe how you selected your topics, chose your research sources, organized your paper, and composed your writing. If you could rewrite that paper, how might you change your approach? • Exercise 2: Describe how to select an appropriate research topic for an audience. How do you analyze your audience? Why is source credibility important, especially for academic and professional audiences? • Exercise 3: Discuss the organizing, drafting, and revising strategies outlined in Research Matters that you find most useful for writing academic papers. How will you use these strategies in future writing?
    • Week 1 DQ 1  Are you an effective communicator? What makes you think so (yes/no?)? What needs improvement?
    • Week 1 DQ 2  What can we do to be sure that the way we “read” a non-verbal message is accurate? What “noise” do you think typically interrupts your listening? Where do you have room for improvement with your listening?
    • Week 1 DQ 3  What are some of the ways you have seen technology change the face of communication for you/your organization? Is it good or bad?
    • Week 2 Assignment Personal Communication Reflection  Write a 1- or 2-paragraph response to each of the following prompts, 750-800 words total. Use this week‟s readings to compose your responses. A: Describe the fundamentals of your communication process. Briefly discuss and provide examples of the components, principles, and contexts of how you use messages to generate meaning. B: Describe a personal situation in which a message was perceived differently than it was intended. Think of personal and professional interactions. Were you on the sending or receiving end of the message? Based on this misperception, what strategies might you use in the future to ensure your audience perceives your messages as you intend?
    • Week 2 DQ 1  Describe three examples of how nonverbal behavior might be misperceived. Think about senses, such as sight, hearing, smell, or touch. How can you avoid these misperceptions? Also, what are some examples of ineffective communication in your workplace, either electronic or face to face, that have led to negative results or poor outcomes. What went wrong? How might these problems be avoided in the future?
    • Week 2 DQ 2  When you write a paper using references, how do you keep track of what information you reference? Might there be a better way? What are some other important tips to share about writing an effective paper? Describe the strategies you use to organize your ideas before you write an academic paper, or a business memo, report, or proposal.
    • Week 2 DQ 3  Do you recognize how we all see the world differently? Are you aware of your own biased perceptions? Give us an example where your perception of a situation was completely different than someone else. Looking at how we view the world differently, can you see now why you had such a varying perception?
    • Week 3 Assignment Interpersonal Communication Video Clip Analysis  Find a short video clip, 3 to 10 minutes, that demonstrates an interpersonal communication failure that had a negative outcome. Consider publicized or historical communication breakdowns, or film or television scenes. Please be sure to describe where the clip comes from in your assignment (for example; the local news, story about …); or a shorter scene clip in a movie; a YouTube video; etc.
    • Week 3 DQ 1  What do you do when you are not effectively listening? Why is it that you don‟t listen? What „types‟ of listening do you use most often (consider review of the textbook or the PowerPoint slides for the 4 types)
    • Week 3 DQ 2  What barriers do you have to effective listening? (Consider review in the textbook/PowerPoint slides)
    • Week 3 DQ 3  What techniques can you use to improve your inter-cultural communications? Can you give us an example of your exposure to intercultural situations?
    • Week 4 Learning Team Assignment Effective Group Communication Action Plan  Prepare a 1,400- to 1,750-word effective group communication action plan. Summarize a scenario from your experiences of working in groups or in Learning Teams that required group conflict management and problem solving. Describe at least three obstacles that threatened the effectiveness of the group. Consider ineffective communication styles, processes, and roles, for example. Propose an action plan analyzing communication strategies for ethical conflict management. Outline procedures to solve similar problems more effectively, and describe the specific communication strategies to achieve productive outcomes in the future.
    • Week 4 DQ 1  What are your fears about public speaking? Where do you think you need to improve? What are some of the features of a GOOD public speaker?
    • Week 4 DQ 2  What roles have you seen played in your group? What role do you tend to take on? Why do these roles enhance communication in our groups?
    • Week 4 DQ 3  Think about a time when a “group” did not work well together…what caused the dissension in the group?
    • Week 5 Learning Team Assignment Effective Presentation Training  Create a 15- to 20-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation with speaker notes that you would use to train coworkers on effective presentation techniques.. Include the following (please note that you are NOT writing a paper; however, speaker notes should be detailed and clear. Where you can use bullets, outline format or any other form of documentation that makes it easy for you to support your presentation, be sure the information is complete; should have notes on all slides; should have a title slide and reference slide as a part of the 20; do not exceed 20 slides).
    • Week 5 DQ 1  Let's talk communication ...what's been most valuable for you in class; what will you take with you after this class?
    • Week 5 DQ 2  What other resources have you seen used to increase the value or quality of presentations?
    • Week 5 DQ 3  Of the suggestions in the text, to organize your presentation, which ones do you like the best (or have heard) and why?
