  1. 1. MISSION EXPLOSION INTERNATIONAL “Striving to be Ambassadors for Christ Around the World” Rusty Swafford, Evangelist PO Box 1331, Athens, TN 37371 (865-292-4411) Info@MissionExplosion.com www.MissionExplosion.com July/August 2014 Issue Rusty Writes: Mexico in the News! A record number of children from Central America are crossing the Mexico-US border. It’s estimated up to 90,000 children will cross over by the end of the year. Unaccompanied by a parent, many of them are fleeing drug violence at home, but here in the United States, they’re faced with a new set of challenges –- a border patrol system unequipped to handle them and a future filled with uncertainty. Children sleep in holding cells at a US Customs and Border Protection processing facility. And for the first time this year, most of these children are coming mainly from three Central American countries: Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. US government officials said that compared to previous years, a larger percentage of these children are girls and under the age of 13. Here’s a look at why these children flee their homes, the dangerous trip to the border and the challenges they face on the other side. Countries in what’s known as the isthmus, the region that stretches from Nicaragua to Guatemala, have the highest murder rates in the world, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. Data from that office shows Honduras is home to the deadliest city in the world, San Pedro Sula, where 169 out of every 100,000 people are murdered. The murder rate in Guatemala is nearly as bad and getting worse. And while El Salvador has seen a slight decrease in murders, it is still ranked fifth globally, according to the latest figures available. “The gangs buy congressmen and political support,” said Roger Noriega, former Assistant Secretary of State for the Western Hemisphere and Ambassador to the Organization of American States. “In Honduras, the president is actually involved in narco-trafficking. He’s certainly not going to put up a fight against these gangs.” There are hundreds of horror stories related to these children who are trying to seek refuge in the United States. An eleven-year-old boy who traveled from Honduras to the US said while in Honduras he recalls watching gang members approach a boy his age while playing in the park. “They stripped the boy naked and raped him,” he said. “The big people forced the children to take their clothes off and also make them sell bad things, and if they don’t do it, they rape them or they kill them.” The drug cartels are recruiting at schools, youth centers and even the children who are attending youth groups in churches. It’s nearly a 3,000-mile journey from Nicaragua to Texas. Most children begin their journey by bus. Some are escorted by a human trafficker who is paid a few thousand dollars to get the child across the border. They stop at safe-houses along the way. The children of Central America ride north atop a freight train called “La Bestia” or “the beast” near Juchitan, Mexico. It is a part of a long journey through Mexico to reach the US border. Many of the children are taken into slavery from this train. Other children literally fall asleep and fall off the train. Many are maimed and killed before they ever make it to the US border. Hundreds are crossing the Hondo River which runs along the border of Belize and Mexico. What is the solution to this overwhelming situation? We, as Americans, would like to see our borders more secure. Some have even stated they would like see our borders closed. I do not personally have the answer for this dilemma. All I can say is the problems we are facing in this world today do not have a thing to do with politics. We may blame this politician or that politician for the problem, but it goes way far beyond a political party. The problem has to do with the ungodly nature of mankind these days. We are on a fast track to becoming a godless world. Many nations have removed God from their countries, and the United States is not far from doing the same. We need to pray for revival in our land and around the world. This is only the beginning of the evil and perilous times we will be facing in the last days. I will close simply to say: pray for revival and continue to proclaim Jesus as the answer to all of the world’s problems. We need to keep reaching out to those who are less fortunate and who are suffering at the hands of wicked people. The apostle Paul said in 2 Timothy 3:1-5, “But realize this that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these.” Please keep praying for and financially supporting MEI as we go back to Mexico this month. Pray for our safety, our health and that we will be faithful ambassadors for Christ. Rusty Bibles I would like to thank those of you who have been sending money for Bibles. We still need to purchase many more Bibles for distribution in India and Mexico. I totally forgot the extra expense we will incur to get the Bibles down to Mexico. In India, we have a Bible distributor in the city of Chennai where we have purchased Bibles for years; however, I have not found a Bible distribution company in Mexico. As I mentioned in last month’s newsletter, we can purchase 24 Bibles for $75. This purchase comes through a Christian Book distributor here in the USA. I am working with the airline to allow us to carry several boxes of Bibles down to Mexico without an extra luggage charge. We should know something in a few days. If we’re not given permission, then we will have to pay between $25-$50 per box. When you are sending money for Bibles, please consider sending a few extra dollars to help us with *shipping costs. We would greatly appreciate it. Bibles for Mexico! Can you purchase? Bibles for India! Can you purchase? A case of 24 Spanish Bibles for $75* A case of 30 Tamil or Telugu Bibles for $90 $500 will buy 160 Bibles* $500 will buy 170 Bibles $1000 will buy 320 Bibles* $1000 will buy 340 Bibles
  2. 2. Mexico Church Building Projects Complete Thank you for your financial contributions to the Playa Church of Christ building project. The work is in the final stages of completion and I wanted to share a couple of photos with you. The windows are now installed. This will be a big blessing to the church members during the rainy season. Also, the fire escape stairs are in place, which gives us access to the rooftop for future renovation for classrooms and dorms. The church members say, “Muchas Gracias!” VBS – India Style The children are back in school in India. The month of May is the only month the children have off from school because of the extreme heat during that time. The children enjoy their free time and attend Vacation Bible School. VBS in India is much like the USA, only the children do not have the luxury of a nice cool church building or the multi- media presentations. However, they still have a good time singing, memorizing Bible verses, participating in Bible dramas, and just having fun! We ask that you consider using your VBS offering to help the ministry in India and Mexico. You might consider raising funds for Bibles, Freedom House Children’s Home, or sending a love offering to an India preacher and his family. We would greatly appreciate you recognizing Mission Explosion International during your VBS week. We have a new video presentation you can use to introduce our ministry to the church. Just let us know what you need, and we’ll get it out to you! MEI T-Shirt Fundraiser Buy It. Wear It. Talk About It.
