   racism are linked?
1500- European settlers set up       1750- The Slave Trade was at its
plantations in America and the West                 height.
Indies. These were large and needed
                                        1764- There were 74 slave ships
          many labourers.
                                        working from Liverpool, 32 from
1510- At first labourers were white     Bristol. British ships transported
   European, but the journey was              50,000 slaves a year.
 dangerous and many workers died.

1517- Spanish traders began to take
  African slaves and sell them to
        plantation owners.

1562- Britain began to sell slaves to
  Spanish plantation owners in the
             Caribbean.
 1673- There were 30,000 slaves in
         Barbados alone.

1713- British traders were supplying
 4,800 slaves a year to the Spanish
     colonies in the Caribbean.

Some captains argued that more room saved lives; others said that
the more you packed in to start with, the more you had left at the
                               end.
Design a poster either against slavery for display on
                the classroom wall.
