  • Needs Assessment Project Mary Ellen Brafford Brooke Ayers EDTC 6140 November 8, 2008
  • Rocky River Elementary School
    • Rocky River Elementary school is located in Concord, North Carolina. It is a very diverse school in terms of the student population. Rocky River has 1052 students in which 55% are Caucasian, 32% African American, 12% Hispanic, 1% Asian and less than 1% are American Indian. Rocky River currently has 116 staff members, and 3 administrators.
    • In the past two years, Rocky River Elementary has spent a great deal of money updating the technology resources. We have 14 SMART Boards, 2 eMac’s in each classroom, an iMac in each teacher office, computer workstations in media center and a computer lab. We have a full time technology facilitator whose job is to train the teachers so the teacher’s can teach the computer classes. We also have a technology training team which goes to training several times throughout the year and reports back to the staff the findings of the workshop.
  • Goals:
    • All students will be prepared to excel in the community, work place and in our global society using 21st century skills
    • All educators, including administrators, will attain the 21st century skills and knowledge necessary to effectively integrate educational technology in order to enable students to achieve the goals of the core curriculum content standards and experience success in a global society
    • Educational technology will be accessible by students, teachers and administrators and utilized for instructional and administrative purposes in all learning environments, including classrooms, library media centers, and other educational settings such as community centers and libraries.
  • Objectives:
    • 1.1 Educational technology will be infused across all curricular areas
    • 1.2 All students will demonstrate proficiency with educational technology
    • 1.3 Instruction and content materials will be universally designed to assure access for all learners through technology.
    • 2.1 All educators, including administrators, will participate in ongoing, sustained, high-quality professional development activities focused on infusing 21st century skills into curricula and instructional practices.
    • 2.2 All educators, including administrators, will use e-mail and other interactive tools to communicate with parents/legally designated caregivers, students and other educators electronically.
    • 2.9 All educators, including administrators, will model and/or promote the effective integration of educational technology and information literacy.
  • Objectives continued
    • 3.1 All educators, including administrators and students, will have access to on-line resources and other distance learning technologies.
    • 3.2 All educators will have access to technical support via a technician and/or other means as necessary to maintain equipment and infrastructure.
  • Professional Development and Support Programs
    • The school has conducted many training sessions for teachers and staff over the past few years. It is important that training does not fall behind as new technology is added in the school. Staff training must provide opportunities to utilize current research, pioneer development of new instructional techniques using technology, and for collaboration with colleagues.
    • Professional development can be facilitated by:
    • Using resources within the region to create innovative and effective staff development programs
    • Identifying technology training needs
    • Providing continuous technology training by employing the NCDPI.
  • Goals for Professional Development and Support:
    • Establish partnerships for identifying and delivering effective technology training as they help students achieve high academic standards.
    • Priority 1 - Surveys conducted by county and by the Instructional Technology Teacher in each building.
    • Priority 1 - Technology courses/workshops through the role of instructional technology teacher.
    • Administer grant programs and financial assistance initiatives that support implementation of educational technology integration by having Smart Boards purchased for use in all classrooms.
  • Survey Information
    • Using the survey powered by surveymonkey.com, staff members at Rocky River will complete this survey online.
    • The survey will calculate and analyze the results.
    • Staff members will also be asked to voluntarily fill out the Technology Self Assessment during a Staff Development meeting.

  • School Secretary
    • My job is important as a school secretary because I am the heart of the technology planning committee. I have to be the “middle man” between the administration and the technology planning team by making sure that I communicate all the information between the two areas. By being school secretary I also have to communicate with the parents, students, and teachers. I have to make sure we have appropriate funds and are able to incorporate the new technology within our current systems and provide staffing requests. I will also be responsible for contacting vendors and creating contracts for the technology team. The new phone system, School Messenger, will be very important to help parents receive all current information about the upcoming needs of our school.
  • Principal
    • As the leader of the technology planning committee, I will oversee what the committee is doing and make sure all of our needs are met by having appropriate balanced staffing. I will have the media coordinator oversee the committee and make sure she has the technology resources and staffing assistance that she needs. I will help great a vision, mission and goals for our school to make it a technology innovative 21st century school. I will check and make sure all the committee members are contributing to the team 100% so the technology incorporated can be successful throughout our schools and classrooms.
  • Student
    • I believe that planning for technology is important so that the school can get computer equipment that can help us learn things easier and faster. I live in a generation where we talk on cell phones, send text messages, surf the net, chat, play games etc. on a daily basis, sometimes at the same time. Using tools similar to this in school will engage us in the learning. It will also make it fun to go to class. We won't have to listen to the teachers lecture and bore us. They can just show us how to use the computers, and probeware, etc. and let us explore and learn things ourselves. We learn a lot by playing games. Using the computers to play games will make the subjects easier to learn.
    • I can help you to how we really learn. I can tell you what type of technology tools we like. I can help evaluate equipment and software and tell you what will engage us. I can be vital to selling this idea to my friends who will tell their parents and get them involved in helping to get technology tools in our school.
  • Parent
    • I believe that planning for technology is important because it is the wave of the future. All students must graduate from high school being proficient in basic computer skills. Workers in different job markets use technology on a daily basis to complete their work. Planning for technology is a must in all school settings. In order to deliver students capable of living and working in the future a plan must be put into effect now to make sure that students are leaving high school with the necessary skills in the use of technology. This is a great concern to us parents and we are willing to go the extra mile to assist with the planning and implementation of technology in this educational system.
    • I can be a voice in the PTA meetings to drum up support for the initiative. The PTA is known for monetary contributions to help improve the quality of education for students attending the school. I can also lobby in the community for support of the school efforts and gain not only monetary but also human and physical resources to help with this initiative.
  • Teacher
    • From the role of a classroom teacher, I find technology to be very important in the classroom. I believe that classroom teachers should be included in the planning process because they know what the classroom needs to be successful. For example, I know that old tape players, like that are in my room, are just not appropriate any more. I will be able to help with deciding which forms of technology are needed in the classroom. Students are in need of up to date technology to be able to be in tune with the rest of the world. Therefore I would like to be on the planning team to help plan for up to date technology in the classrooms.
  • Technology Facilitator
    • Technology is my job. I am so glad that there is technology in this world or I would be out of work. I feel that I am a very important person on the planning team. I am up to date on technology, software and hardware. I will be able to help identify needed items for classroom, computer labs, offices, cafeteria, and the media center. I will also be able to help teachers realize that using technology can simplify lesson planning, data collection and presenting material. I feel that I will also be able to help the students know that technology is the wave of the future. I will discuss ideas with the students that will help them not only at school succeed using technology, but at home as well.
    • I also am very aware of the budget and costs of items through the technology funding. I will be able to help give a better understanding of what is a reasonable request and what is far fetched.
  • Media Specialist
    • Since I have knowledge in all areas of the curriculum, I feel that I can help with the technology planning. I use technology everyday in the media center ranging from a Smart Board, projector, computers as a card catalog and computers to check in books and check books out. Without technology in the media center our students would need more time out of the classroom to utilize the media center in its fullest extent.
    • I also will be able to contribute information regarding what the teachers need in the classroom in regards to technology. I often check these types of materials in and out of the media center. For example, overheads, listening centers and word processors
  • Office Personnel
    • I use technology on a daily basis. I am constantly working on the computer to create newsletters, add new students, or look up information on students. I believe I would make a great contribution to the technology planning team to give insight on what will help the office staff on a daily basis.

  • Focus Group Description
    • Focus Group Included:
    • A teacher, a parent, a student, a principal, a media coordinator, a secretary, a technology facilitator.
    • Response 1 of the group is that we need more of an expansive budget to purchase everything we need. Technology has grown so much in the past year that we need to increase our budget to keep up.
    • Response 2: You cannot separate technology and curriculum. They are intertwined and they cannot be seperated. The students seem to learn so much more with the SmartBoards and internet research.
    • Response 3: We need to be able to make all of our classrooms “21 st Century Classrooms”
    • We will analyze the responses by bringing the findings to the Director of Elementary Education, and for her to bring it to the School Board for the increase in budget. We will also bring test scores to show that technology can also increase our test data.
  • Findings
    • After reviewing and analyzing the survey and checklist, the administrators would be given the results to look over and comment on. The results would also be posted on the school website for the ones whom were on the team to comment on in a blog style.
    • After commenting in a blog style for a few weeks and making any necessary changes, the plan would be given back to the administrators for a final viewing. Once the plan had the final approval it would submitted to the School Improvement Team for final approval for distribution.
  • Simulated Report
    • After reviewing the data collected through the survey, checklist and interviews, the following has been determined from our needs assessment.
  • Finding 1:
    • 100% of the individuals surveyed have access to a computer.
  • Finding 2:
    • When asked how often they visit the computer lab monthly, 50% reported they visit once a month and 50% reported they visit three or more times a month.
  • Finding 3:
    • 50% of those surveyed stated they have computers in their classroom for use.
    • 50% of those surveyed stated they do not have computers in their classroom for use.
  • Finding 4:
    • When asked about the feelings toward technology, 100% of the interviewees agreed technology was important.
  • Finding 5:
    • 100% agreed that technology integrated into the classroom to help with instruction.
  • Finding 6:
    • 100% stated they would be able to train others about using technology.
  • Finding 7:
    • Many of the teachers use the software offered at school to implement technology in the classroom.
  • Finding 8:
    • There are several programs teachers would like to have access to at school to be able to implement technology more efficiently.
  • Finding 9:
    • 85% of the people surveyed have tried using technology such as excel, inspiration and iPhoto.
    • Those same 85% of people believe they can teach certain areas of technology such as SMART Board, Kidspiration and digital cameras.
  • With these findings….
    • Rocky River Elementary School will focus on providing staff development on using more aspects of technology in the classroom.
    • The administrators will be responsible for observing each teacher teaching and implementing technology in the computer lab monthly where the students are involved.
    • Each classroom that does not currently house computers will receive two computers for student use.
    • Staff will be responsible for using email on a daily basis to communicate with office personnel.
  • These findings…
    • These findings will be discussed by the Technology team along with the School Improvement team and then released to the Board of Education for approval.
