    • Recap of PPM Installation Best Practices
    • Questions?
  • 3. Is this a STANDALONE or NETWORK installation of PPM?
      • This is the first question that should be answered
        • Proper troubleshooting techniques will be determined by the installation method used
  • 4. Where are the application folders installed?
    • STANDALONE Install NETWORK Install
    • C: drive X: drive
    • Program Files Arbitron
    • PPM PPMApps
    • Weeklies
    • PostgreSQL PPM
    • Weeklies
    • PostgreSQL
      • Best practice recommends the following criterion are met when installing PPM:
        • PostgreSQL, PPM and WEEKLIES folders are installed to the same location
        • Install the applications no more than 3 folders deep
        • Do not use spacing in the folder names whenever possible
        • PPM must be installed on an NTFS formatted drive
      • If the application folders must be moved you must reinstall PostgreSQL, ANALYSIS TOOL and/or WEEKLIES, simply moving the folders will not work.
      • PPM software will perform poorly if the PostgreSQL, PPM and Weeklies application folders are not installed to the same folder location.
  • 5. Can a custom path be specified when installing PostgreSQL and PPM applications?
    • YES!
        • How-To: When installing PPM simply select the Network Server installation. You can use Network Server installation whether installing on a server or workstation, the software operation is transparent to the user. Alternatively, you can install STANDALONE method if you want to accept the default location, C: drive on either a Server or Workstation.
  • 6. Are the Workstations/Servers installing PPM managed by the Microsoft Active Directory?
      • Active Directory installations will require additional support and planning prior to installation. Please seek assistance from a Level 2 support representative…HOWEVER…..
        • How-To: Right-click the My Computer icon on the Desktop, then left-click Properties and click the Computer Name tab. The PC is likely managed by Active Directory if there is a domain name shown.
  • 7. YOU CAN STILL OFFER ASSISTANCE! DO NOT BE INTIMIDATED BY ACTIVE DIRECTORY!
  • 8. Is PPM installed on a supported operating system? NO HOME – XP or VISTA
      • Windows 2000 Professional & Server SP4
      • Windows XP Professional SP2
      • Windows Server 2003 (any edition) SP1
      • Windows VISTA BUSINESS
      • VMWare (above Windows environments only)
      • MAC OSX with Windows dual boot software
        • How-To: Right-Click the My Computer icon on the Desktop, left-click Properties. The current operating system is displayed on the General tab under the System section.
  • 9. Does the customer have a copy of the latest PPM STANDALONE Requirements?
      • Minimum requirements provide an absolute baseline, performance may suffer if anything less than minimum.
      • Current as of ANALYSIS TOOL version 9.0.15 and WEEKLIES 6.0.4.

  • 11. Is the processor fast enough?
      • PPM application performance suffers if processors cannot support the workload. Processor upgrades are costly, time consuming and almost always a last resort.
        • How-To: Right-Click the My Computer icon on the Desktop, left-click Properties. Processor speed is displayed on the General tab.
  • 12. Is there enough RAM installed in the PC?
      • PPM application performance suffers if there’s not enough RAM to hold pending jobs for the processor. RAM is one of the easiest and least expensive items to upgrade in a PC.
        • How-To: Right-Click the My Computer icon on the Desktop, left-click Properties. Amount of RAM is displayed on the General tab.
  • 13. Is there enough free hard disk space in the PC?
      • Hard disk space is the 2 nd easiest component to upgrade, although if you make changes to the operating system space backups will be required and could be very time consuming.
        • How-To: Double-click My Computer on the Desktop, Right-click the C: drive, left-click Properties. The How-To can also be used for Network drive installations.
        • Each PPM data file is approximately 10MB in size. You can use your best guess judgment if the user will require more space depending on how much data they plan to install.
        • The NTFS file system is required to install PPM software.
  • 14. Are the most recent Windows Updates and Service Packs installed?
      • Windows Updates and Service Packs are critical to ensure performance and security enhancements are installed for proper application functionality. For example: Microsoft .NET 2.0 Framework or higher is required!
      • Windows Critical Updates are extremely important to application functionality.
      • Arbitron tests software with all critical updates and service packs installed so you should recommend the users do the same!
        • How-To: http:// windowsupdate.microsoft.com /
  • 15. Does the user have administrative privileges on the PC they are installing PPM on?
      • Administrative privileges are required to install PPM software and can be assigned temporarily.
      • You do not need administrative privileges to use the PPM software, only CHANGE (Share Permissions) and MODIFY (NTFS permissions).
  • 16. Do I need to set SHARE permissions when running PPM in STANDALONE mode?
    • NO!
        • Share permissions only apply to Network installation environments. Share permissions govern the level of access a user has when coming through a network resource such as a mapped drive.
  • 17. Are there any antivirus, spyware or intrusion detection applications running?
      • Antivirus, Real-time Scanning, and Antispyware applications must be disabled in order to install PPM software.
      • Administrators can also add exceptions for ANALYSIS TOOL, WEEKLIES and PostgreSQL to their Antiviral toolkits.
        • Exceptions allow applications to function normally without disabling the antivirus applications.
        • After adding the exceptions it may be necessary to restart the antivirus applications for the settings to take effect.
  • 18. PPM Installation Best Practices
    • Is this a STANDALONE or NETWORK installation of PPM?
    • Are the PPM applications installed to the same location?  Where?
    • Is the drive NTFS formatted?
