Product Complexity:In the early automotive days the Model T offered it’s customers very little in the way of options or customization. In fact, Henry Ford used to say that “You can paint it (your car) any color….as long as it’s black”.
The number of parts that make up today’s jet engines has increased by an order of magnitude from those produced in the 1960’s.
So while companies are faced with the challenge of turning more ideas into successful products, today’s environment means that they have to meet this challenge in a world that is increasingly more complex than ever before. The complexity comes from the fact that companies must need achieve successful innovation but must do it while meeting the more demanding requirements for: Speed – rapidly take an idea and deliver it to market Globalization – develop innovations in the context of global market being served, global partners that are engaged and global resources used to bring these innovations to market Sustainability – deliver product innovations that are environmentally friendly today and that will not have harmful effects on the environment in the future. Optimization – take greatest advantage of the resources that they have available to them today through greater productivity and more efficient processes, all while optimizing the cost and quality of the products they deliver.
So after viewing these examples of complexity it becomes increasingly clear that complexity is a reality that today’s companies embrace in order to increase and sustain their competitiveness. This quote from A.T. Kearney in their publication titled “The complexity challenge” points out that companies cannot just focus on reducing complexity, they must accept complexity as a requirement and take action to manage this environment.
