  • 3. The Author  Yann Martel, a Spanish born Canadian novelist, is the author of Life of Pi.  Martel was inspired by an elderly man in Pondicherry, India to write Life of Pi.  Martel interviewed Pi Patel, and he immersed himself within the Indian culture for two years to write Life of Pi.
  • 4. Genre  Life of Pi is a work of fiction.  The novel can be classified as an adventure fantasy novel.  The novel can also be classified as a magical realism or philosophical piece of literature.
  • 5. Main Characters  Piscine Molitor Patel (Pi): Pi is the main character of the story. He is a teenage Indian boy, son of a zookeeper.  Richard Parker: He is the Bengal tiger that becomes Pi’s reason for living. GoogleImages.Com
  • 6. Setting  Time: Martel starts the story from an undetermined point in time. Pi’s tragic events begin on July 2, 1997. His journey on the Pacific Ocean lasts for 227 days.  Place: Pi’s story starts with his childhood in Pondicherry, India. The place changes, remarkably, as the story unfolds.
  • 7. Book Summary  During his family’s voyage from India to Canada, the ship sinks. Pi manages to get into a lifeboat. While he is lost at sea, Pi’s only companions a zebra, an orangutan, a hyena, and a Bengal tiger.  Two major themes that emerge throughout the novel are the desire to survive and the power of stories.
  • 8. Rating  Life of Pi is absolutely one of the best novels that I have read.  If you are looking for a novel that is full of adventure, a range of emotions, philosophy and culture, then Life of Pi is the book for you!  I give this novel “five stars.” GoogleImages.Com
