  1. 1. Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) 2011 ONS ONCOLOGY CLINICAL LECTURESHIP AWARD (EC11) The Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) welcomes your nomination for the ONS Oncology Clinical Lectureship Award. Introduction The ONS Oncology Clinical Lectureship was established in 1985 to recognize and support excellence in the clinical practice. The lecture is presented at the ONS Annual Congress. Nominee’s Eligibility Criteria The candidate must meet the following criteria: • Be a registered professional nurse and an active ONS member • Has a minimum of two years experience in oncology nursing whose clinical practice is consistent with the ONS Scope of Oncology Nursing Practice • Is recognized as an expert in clinical nursing practice because of his/her contributions to the development of oncology nursing • Be an effective communicator Scoring Criteria To assist you in completing the 2010 ONS ONCOLOGY CLINICAL LECTURESHIP AWARD nomination packet, the scoring criteria for judging this nomination packet is as follows: 1. Practice exemplifies the ONS scope of practice (Taken from the ONS Scope of Nursing Practice) a. Use of theoretical concepts b. Use of the nursing process c. Professional development of self and other d. Multidisciplinary collaboration e. Quality assurance f. Uses ethical decision making g. Reviews and applies research into practice 1) Examples of actual patient contacts 2) Examples of actual patient experiences provided by patients within the reference letters 3) Clinical practice nursing research 4) Topics, lectures, a model or theory 5) Developed standards of care 6) Published a model/theory Page 1 of 7
  2. 2. 2. Effective communicator a. Examples within reference letters b. Presentations listed on CV well written based on the conference 3. ONS involvement. Participation should include involvement at the local or national level, and includes membership on committees, holding office, or task force participation. 4. Clinical practice contribution to the literature. (Includes articles in newsletters, journals, reports, video, multimedia, computer assisted instruction, or chapters in books) 5. Contribution to the development of Oncology Nursing Practice a. Examples from reference letters or on CV b. Clinical developments such as staff development, program development, patient teaching, support groups c. Community outreach (programs such as ACS, Leukemia Society, camps for patients with cancer, survivor's day participation or other related activities d. Adjunct faculty or preceptor of students 6. Clinical topic Award The recipient presents a lecture at the ONS Annual Congress and publishes his/her presentation in the Oncology Nursing Forum. The recipient receives a $2,000 honorarium, one coach airfare to ONS Annual Congress, two-day per diem for Congress and a plaque. Nomination Procedure 1. Anyone can submit the complete nomination packet. 2. The complete nomination packet for this award includes the following: a. Completed Nomination Form b. Nominee’s curriculum vitae c. One email page synopsis from the nominee, which includes the topic of the presentation the nominee would present if selected for the lectureship. Topic submitted must be clinical in nature. d. Three email letters of recommendation from any of the following categories: 1) Colleague 2) Client/significant other 3) Employer/supervisor/mentor 4) Community service organization Page 2 of 7
  3. 3. 3. The complete nomination packet must be sent via email only to awards@ons.org and be received by October 31, 2010, 5pm, ET (1700 hrs) to be accepted. 4. Within three business days, the ONS National Office will email confirmation of receipt of the complete nomination packet. 5. Incomplete nomination packets will be returned to the nominator and will not be considered by the Awards Review Team. 6. Nomination packets received after October 31, 2010, 5 pm, ET (1700 hrs) will be returned to the nominator and will not be considered by the Awards Review Team. 7. The nomination packet is considered confidential. 8. The Awards Review Team reviews all complete nomination packets and makes recommendations to the ONS Board of Directors. 9. The ONS Board of Directors will approve the recipient of the award. The ONS Executive Director will notify the recipient. Directions for nominator: 1. Complete the Nomination Form and secure the nominee’s curriculum vitae, nominee’s one email page synopsis, and three email letters of recommendation. 2. Confirm that the nominee is a professional nurse and an active ONS member. 3. Submit the complete nomination packet via email only to awards@ons.org by October 31, 2010, 5pm, ET (1700 hrs). The complete nomination packet includes the following attachments: a. Nomination Form (includes three essays) b. Nominee’s curriculum vitae c. One email page synopsis from the nominee, which includes the topic of the presentation the nominee would present if selected for the lectureship. Topic submitted must be clinical in nature. d.   4. 4. 4. The one email page synopsis from the nominee, addressing the award criteria should be forwarded with the completed nomination packet. The one email page synopsis must contain the nominee’s full name, title, and workplace information (e.g., address, phone number). The one email page synopsis can be sent as a Word document attached to the complete nomination packet. 5. The email letters of support should be forwarded with the completed nomination packet. The email letters of support must contain the supporter’s full name, title, and workplace information (e.g., address, phone number). The email letters of support can be sent as Word documents attached to the complete nomination packet or as forwarded emails from the supporters. 6. Place the name of the award and the nominee in the subject heading of the email. For example, the subject heading would read as follows: “2011 ONS Oncology Clinical Lectureship Award – Debra Smith.” 7. If you will be sending more than one email for the same nominee, please identify this in the subject heading. For example, the subject heading would read as follows: “2011 ONS Oncology Clinical Lectureship Award – Debra Smith, 1 of 4 emails.” Directions for completing the Nomination Form: 1.
