Scripture Tradition

 1. 1. Scripture and Tradition A bible handwritten in Latin transcribed in Belgium in 1407 for reading aloud in a monastery
 2. 2. The Holy Bible

The Bible is our book

Confronted by a scripture quoting preacher?

Is the Bible the only authority? Sola Scriptura?

 3. 3. What Protestants Quote

2 Tim 3:16-17 – All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work.

Codex Alexandrinus – Gospel of Luke
 4. 4. What Protestants Quote

1 Cor 4:6 – I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, brothers, so that you may learn from us not to go beyond what is written, so that none of you will be inflated with pride in favor of one person over against another.

 5. 5. What Protestants Quote

Acts 17:10-11 – the brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas to Beroea during the night. Upon arrival they went to the synagogue of the Jews. These Jews were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with all willingness and examined the scriptures daily to determine whether these things were so.

 6. 6. What Protestants Quote

Rev 22:18-19 – I warn everyone who hears the prophetic words in this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book, and if anyone takes away from the words in this prophetic book, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city described in this book

 7. 7. What does Scripture really mean?

2 Tim 3:16-17 - All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work.

This says that all scripture is good, but does not say that only scripture is good for these

Also, the previous 2 verses (14,15) talk about Tradition, so if read in context, it is talking about both Scripture and Tradition.

 8. 8. What does Scripture really mean?

1 Cor 4:6 – I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, brothers, so that you may learn from us not to go beyond what is written, so that none of you will be inflated with pride in favor of one person over against another

“ what is written” refers to 1 Cor 3:19-20:

For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the eyes of God, for it is written: "He catches the wise in their own ruses," and again: "The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain."

Paul is telling the Corinthians to be humble, and not favour one person over another

 9. 9. What does Scripture really mean?

Rev 22:18-19 – I warn everyone who hears the prophetic words in this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book, and if anyone takes away from the words in this prophetic book, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city described in this book

This is referring to the book of Revelation. Only referring to what is revealed to St John

 10. 10. What does Scripture really mean?

Acts 17:10-11 – the brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas to Beroea during the night. Upon arrival they went to the synagogue of the Jews. These Jews were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with all willingness and examined the scriptures daily to determine whether these things were so.

“ These things” refer to verses 2-3:

Following his usual custom, Paul joined them, and for three sabbaths he entered into discussions with them from the scriptures, expounding and demonstrating that the Messiah had to suffer and rise from the dead, and that "This is the Messiah, Jesus, whom I proclaim to you."

They were examining the scriptures to determine about “the Messiah had to suffer and rise from the dead, and Jesus is the Messiah

 11. 11. What does Scripture really mean?

1 Pet 1:25 – the word of the Lord remains forever." This is the word that has been proclaimed to you.

This is not talking about written Scripture, but of the word proclaimed to you – the oral word
