How? It is a HDPVR receiver with two freelyusable tuner slots. For thistest Amiko provided us withnot only one but two DVB-T/T2/C and DVB-S/S2 tun-ers, which allowed us to setup and evaluate the new HD8840 based on a number ofdifferent configurations. The receiver comes in asleek all-black design andsports a perfectly readableVFD display on its front panelso that users are not only in-formed about the currentlyselected channel or the localtime, but can also gather ad-ditional information about ac-tive recordings, for instance.A total of seven buttons arelocated on the front panel aswell and this way you are ableto use the Amiko box withoutthe remote control, if needbe. A Conax card reader, a CIslot for any standard CA mod-ule and a USB 2.0 interfaceare all hidden behind a flapon the right side of the frontpanel.does not come with an instal-lation assistant. Yet, this is byno means a bad thing, sincethe main menu impresseswith its very user-friendlylayout and provides all setupand configuration optionsright where you’d expectthem. To be on the safe side,we recommend looking at theHDMI video output resolutionfirst and selecting the modethat is perfect for your hard-ware. We did like the fact thatthis Amiko receiver offers anAuto mode (which adjusts theresolution to the currently re-ceived event) and a Native byTV option (which automati-cally chooses the optimumresolution your TV panel canhandle). Alternatively, youcan try to max out on qualityand go for 1080p Full HD.As far as the receiving endof the HD 8840 is concerned, the corresponding menuchanges according to the tun-ers that are used in the avail-able slots. In other words: Ifyou use two DVB-S/S2 tunersyou will not be offered anyoptions for terrestrial or cableTV, while using a combinationAmiko HD8840At long last: A receiver that can handle alltypes of DVB and even comes with full PVRfunctionalityTurning the Amiko HD 8840around to have a closer lookat the back panel, the twotuner slots will strike you rightaway. The tuners themselvescome with a loop-throughoutput and Amiko has alsothought of an HDMI output,an optical and a digital au-dio output, as well as threeRCA jacks for stereo audioand CVBS video. The rangeof connection options is com-pleted by an additional USB2.0 socket, an RJ45 networkinterface, an RS232 connec-tion and – DXers, take note!– a switchable 0/12V output. All this should meet virtu-ally all requirements, andwhen we also discovered amechanical power switch wealmost felt like we had arrivedin receiver heaven…The remote control thatis shipped with this receivercreates a pleasing first im-pression which seems to goa long way: Not only doesit sit nicely in your hand, italso boasts clearly labelledbuttons. The manual is in aleague of its own too, with itsexcellent structure and easyto comprehend instructionsand explanations. Before you actually use theAmiko HD 8840 for the firsttime, it makes sense to take amoment and think about whatyou want or can receive inthe first place. The two tunerslots can then be equippedaccordingly, something that istruly child’s play: All you needto do is loosen three screwson the receiver case to accessthe tuner modules, which inturn are attached with a sin-gle screw. Installing or ex-changing tuners turned out tobe plug & play at its best inour test, so even those of youwho are all thumbs will ex-perience no problems in thatregard.Like the rest of the Amikoreceiver range the HD 8840

In case you’rewondering, we should empha-sise once again that the ter-restrial tuner cannot only dealwith DVB-T and DVB-T2, butalso with DVB-C signals.Using the Amiko HD 8840 insatellite mode it comes with apre-stored satellite list com-prising a total of 28 entries.Even though we can confirmthat these are reasonably up-to-date, the list is restrictedto satellite positions cover-ing Europe and we wouldn’tmind if Amiko had made it abit more extensive. But let’snot sing the blues about that, since adding new satelliteentries manually is a ratherstraightforward affair andthanks to the receiver’s blindscan capabilities you don’teven need to key in tran-sponder data by hand. For the sake of complete-ness we can state that theHD 8840 supports all DiSEqCprotocols from 1.0 through to1. The HD 8840 can put outthe HDMI video signal with aresolution of up to 1080p2. Both the channel list and thefavourites lists can be freelycustomised3. The available 0/12V out-put doubles the number ofsatellite positions that can beaddressed so that in theorythis Amiko receiver can dealwith up to 32 LNBs simultane-ously, which is quite a treat.Apart from the automaticchannel search and a manualtransponder search mode youmay opt for the integratedblind scan function in orderto breathe some life into yourchannel list. We tried it outon HOTBIRD 13° East andarrived at 1549 TV channelsand 373 radio stations afterless than six minutes. C bandreception turned out to beequally trouble-free with theHD 8840 and with the helpof manual LOF entry you caneasily set up the box to dealwith out-of-the-ordinary LOFvalues as well.We appreciated the fact thatthe HD 8840 allows you to in-crease the supply voltage by0.5V, which is helpful in caseof long coax cable lengths. The Auto DiSEqC function isanother plus: The receiverautomatically detects whichsatellite is linked to the tunervia which DiSEqC port. Therather limited default satel-lite list is a major drawbackhere, since Auto DiSEqC willonly detect positions that areshowing on this list. One of the signature fea-tures of the Amiko HD 8840 iscalled FastScan. As the nameimplies, it can be used toquickly scan all transpondersof a total of eight pre-storedEuropean pay TV providersbroadcasting via satellite. Wetried it out with Dutch provid-er CanalDigitaal and were im-pressed by the result: All en-tries of that pay TV operatorappeared in next to no time, without having to individuallyscan a range of different tran-sponders.In DVB-T/T2 mode therange of settings and optionsis considerably smaller, butthat’s the nature of digitalterrestrial television and nofault of the Amiko receiver. You may select your region, transmit +5V power via theinner wire of the attachedcoax cable in order to providesupply voltage to an externalantenna amplifier, call up afrequency editor or activate

We checked out bothand could not detect anyfault. If you prefer a wirelesshome and want to do awaywith network cables altogeth-er, you can also choose to con-nect your Amiko HD 8840 toa WiFi network. All you needfor that is a USB WiFi adapterwith Ralink RT5370 chipset. You should note, though, thatthis is optional equipment anddoes not come together withthe receiver itself.Among the network-basedfeatures we enjoyed the mostis a weather forecast serviceand an RSS news feed, bothof which are seamlessly in-tegrated in the Amiko HD8840’s software. Even GoogleEarth can be accessed, but inmost cases the distance be-tween TV panel and viewerwill be too large to thoroughlyexploit that function. In our presentation of allbenefits of this receiver weshould also mention an ex-tremely low power consump-tion of less than 0.5 W instandby mode – somethingthat will only gain in impor-tance with the steadily risingcost of energy. Booting fromthis deep standby mode takesseveral seconds, on the otherhand, so if you’re of the im-patient kind you might wantto go for the so-called FakeStandby mode which will ac-tivate the box without anydelay. Power consumption inthis case, however, is almostthe same in standby and dur-ing active use. The tuners boast a low threshold and in ourtest were perfectly able to receive and process weak signals aswell. With its 1080p video output option this new Amiko receiver isdefinitely fit for the future. We noticed that only eight timer events could be stored in thetimer memory, which simply isn’t enough. The pre-stored satellitelist could also use some more entries.
