Getting started
WARNING
Do not place your BT Decor 425
in the bathroom or other humid
areas.
If you do not have a modern phone
socket, call Freefone 0800 800
150 and ask for a BT engineer to
come and fit the correct one.
This is a chargeable service.
Location
You need to place your Decor 425 close enough to
the phone and mains power sockets so that both cords
will reach.
Setting up the phone
1. Plug the power adaptor into the left side of your Decor 425.
2. Route the power cord through the groove as shown below.

Ringer On – The phone rings when you receive an
incoming call.
Ringer Off – The phone does not ring when you receive
an incoming call.
If there is a power failure you will
need to reset the day and time.

Making and receiving calls
1. Lift the handset, listen for the dial tone, then dial the
number.

When your phone rings:
If the ringer switch is set to Ringer

ring when you receive a call.

During a call, you can talk to someone nearby without
your caller hearing you.

When storing numbers you will still
hear the dial tone and may hear
recorded messages from the
telephone exchange. Please ignore
this, it does not affect storing
numbers.

Up to 10 phone numbers can be stored in the memory.
Each number can be up to 16 digits long.

The outgoing message is the message a caller hears
when your BT Decor 425 answers a call.
There are two pre-recorded outgoing messages that
you can choose from, outgoing message 1 allows callers
to leave a message, whilst outgoing message 2 does not.

OGM.
Your Decor 425 will stop
recording if:
• A caller pauses for more than 4
seconds when leaving a message.
• The memory becomes full during
recording.
• The incoming message lasts
longer than 3 minutes.
Indefinite message back-up
Your Decor 425 saves all messages indefinitely until
you delete them. Your messages will not be lost in the
event of a power cut.
Memory full
If the answering machine memory becomes full the
message indicator will flash rapidly. You will not be
able to record any more caller’s messages, a new
OGM or memos. The BT Decor 425 will announce
memory full.

Using the answering machine
If any of these functions are tried while the memory is
full, your Decor 425 will announce “Memory full”.
To clear space in the memory you will need to delete
some or all of the messages. See ‘To delete individual
messages’, on page 21.
Answer delay
The answer delay is the number of times your Decor 425
rings before answering calls.
It is pre-set to 6 rings. You can choose from between
2 and 9 rings or Time Saver.
1. Press and hold Skip .
You hear the settings.

What is Time Saver?
If you access your answering
machine remotely and you have set
Time Saver mode, your Decor 425
will answer calls after 6 rings if no
new messages have been recorded,
or 2 rings if new messages have
been recorded. So, you can
hang-up after 2 rings knowing you
have no new messages and save
the cost of the call.

Using the answering machine
Memos
You can record memos to be played back by another user
of your Decor 425.
Memos are stored on the answering machine like caller’s
messages and can be up to 12 minutes long (maximum
recording time).
1. Press and hold

When you have new messages the message indicator
will flash.
The LED will flash when any messages are received,
regardless of whether they have been listened to.
The light is on permanently when the answering machine
is on and there are no messages received.
The light is off only when the answering machine is off.

Playing messages and memos
1. Press

The number of stored messages is announced.
Your messages and memos are then played back in the
order they were received together with the day and time
of recording.
While your messages are being played back:

once to replay the current message

STOP during the 8 seconds, all
messages will be saved.
Deleting all messages
1. Wait until all messages have been played back and you
hear “End of messages. To delete all messages, press
delete”.
2. During the next 8 seconds, press
Del
.
You will hear “All messages deleted”.
To screen calls, make sure the
answer machine is switched on and
that the loudspeaker volume is set
to an audible level.
Call screening
When your answering machine takes an incoming call,
you can listen to the caller over the loudspeaker. You can
then decide whether or not to take the call in person.
1. When the phone rings, let the machine answer the call
and wait until the caller begins to leave their message.
2. If you choose to speak to the caller in person, pick up
your handset.
Your Decor 425 will automatically stop recording.

Remote access

Remote access lets you switch on your Decor 425
answering machine and listen to your messages from
any Touchtone™ telephone.
Before you can access your messages, you must enter
a 3-digit security code.
The pre-set security code is 000, but you can change
this to a more memorable number.

You will hear “Second digit” and the current setting.
5. Select the second and third digits as you did for the first.
When you have set all three digits, your new security
code will be announced.
Remote operation
1. Call your Decor 425.
2. After listening to the outgoing message press
on
the phone you are using. You will hear, “Please enter your
security code”.
If you do not enter the security
code within 8 seconds or if you
enter the wrong security code you
will hear, “Incorrect security code,
please enter your security code”.
If you enter the wrong code again
you will hear, “Incorrect security
code, thank you for calling” and
the line will be disconnected.
3. You have 8 seconds to enter your security code.
4. You will hear “You have ‘x’ new messages” and message
playback begins.
5. At the end of playback you will hear “To hear the main
menu, press 1”.
You now have 8 seconds to enter the main menu before
your phone hangs up.
6. Follow the instructions in the main menu to control your
answering machine (see ‘Remote access menu’).

Switch on your answering machine from
another phone
If you forgot to turn on your answering machine before
going out:
1. Ring your Decor 425.
After 20 rings your machine will take the call.
While listening to your OGM,
pressing (5) will reset to the
pre-recorded OGM.
2. You can now access your Decor 425 remotely
(see page 24).

Section
Many common problems are caused by the telephone and power cables being incorrectly
connected, not connected at all, or the power being turned off.
Please check that your BT Decor 425 has been correctly set up, see page 6, before ringing
the BT Decor 425 Helpline.
No dialling tone
Check your line/power cord connections.
You dial and nothing happens
You may be connected to an exchange which has not been modernised. Call BT on
Freefone 0800 800 150 for information.
The phone does not ring
Check the ringer is not turned off. (See page 7).
Are there too many other phones or faxes connected to the same line? (See ‘How many
telephones can you have?’, on page 33.)
You hear the dial tone or recorded exchange messages when storing numbers
This may happen when storing numbers. Ignore any noise as it will not affect storing.

Help
Your Decor 425 cannot be operated from another phone
Check the phone you are using is a Touchtone™ phone or is set to tone dialling.
Check you are using the correct security code. (See page 23.)
When entering your code, make sure you allow enough time, at least 2 seconds,
between digits for your Decor 425 to recognise each one.
Noise interference coming through the loudspeaker
Make sure your Decor 425 is not placed too near another mobile or cordless phone.
Some cordless telephones and payphones are not compatible.

Safety
General
Only use the power supply included with the product. Using an unauthorised power
supply unit will invalidate your guarantee and may damage the answer machine.
The item code for the power supply unit is 010198.
Do not open your Decor 425. This could expose you to high voltages or other risks.
Environmental
Do not expose to direct sunlight.
We recommend that you do not place the product on antique/veneered wood to avoid
damage.
Do not stand your product on carpets or other surfaces which generate fibres, or place it
in locations preventing a free flow of air over it’s surfaces.
Do not submerge any part of your product in water and do not use it in damp or humid
conditions, such as in bathrooms.
Do not expose your product to fire, explosive or other hazardous conditions.
There is a slight chance that your phone could be damaged by an electrical storm.
We recommend that you unplug the power and telephone line cord for the duration of
the storm, as damage is not covered by the guarantee.

Cleaning
Clean your Decor 425 with a damp (not wet) cloth, or an anti-static wipe. Never use
household polish as this may damage the product. Never use a dry cloth as this may
cause static shock.
Guarantee
Your BT Decor 425 is guaranteed for a period of 12 months from the date of purchase.
Subject to the terms listed below the guarantee will provide for the repair of, or at BT’s
or its agent’s discretion the option to replace the BT Decor 425, or any component
thereof, which is identified as faulty or below standard, or as a result of inferior
workmanship or materials. Products over 28 days old from the date of purchase may be
replaced with a refurbished or repaired product.
The conditions of this guarantee are:
The guarantee shall only apply to defects that occur within 12 months from the date of
purchase, provided that the equipment is sent to the repair address within this period.
This guarantee does not cover any faults or defects caused by accidents, misuse, fair
wear and tear, neglect, tampering with the equipment, or any attempt at adjustment or
repair other than approved agents.
This guarantee does not affect your statutory rights.

Within the 12 month guarantee period:
If you experience a problem with your BT Decor 425 please read the Help section or call
the Helpline on 0870 605 8047. Calls are charged at national rates.
In the unlikely event of a defect occurring, please return the product, with the receipt, to
the place of purchase.
Outside of the 12 month guarantee period:
If your product needs repair after the guarantee period has ended, the repair must meet
the approval requirements for connection to the telephone
network. We recommend that you call the Helpline on 0870 605 8047 for information on
our recommended repair agents.
Returning your phone
If the Helpline is unable to remedy your problem they will ask you to return the product.
Where possible, pack the product in its original packaging. All parts must be returned
including the mains power adaptor. (Please note that we cannot take responsibility for
goods damaged in transit.) Please obtain and keep proof of posting from the Post Office.

Technical information
How many telephones can you have?
All items of telephone equipment have a Ringer Equivalence Number (REN), which is
used to calculate the number of items which may be connected to any one telephone line.
Your Decor 425 has a REN of 1. A total REN of 4 is allowed, if the total REN of 4 is
exceeded, the telephones may not ring. With different telephone types there is no
guarantee of ringing, even when the REN is less than 4.
R&TTE
This product is intended for use within the UK for connection to the public telephone
network and compatible switchboards.
This equipment complies with the essential requirements for the Radio Equipment and
Telecommunications Terminal Equipment Directive (1999/5/EC).

Hereby, Suncorp Technologies, declares that this Decor 425 is in compliance with the

Switchboard compatibility
This product is intended for use within the UK for connection to the public telephone
network and compatible switchboards, which support tone dialling and time break recall.
If in doubt please consult your service provider.
Recall
The R Recall button is used with switchboards, certain BT Calling Features and other
network services, such as telephone banking.
Wall-mounting your Decor 425 (Optional)
1. Using a 3mm bit, drill two holes in the wall 70mm vertically apart.
2. Insert the wall plugs (if necessary) then screw in the screws, leaving a small gap between
the screw heads and the wall.

3. Route the line and power cords through the back of your Decor 425 as shown below.
Fit the wall-mounting bracket to the base of the phone.
4. To stop the handset falling when the base is wall-mounted, rotate the handset clip 180°.
