CanVAS® SmartCoverage™
Deployment of new technologies in the Radio Access Network such as 3G or LTE is a well-studied process benefiting from many optimization tools. Most optimization methods depend on reports that are generated by evaluating the already deployed infrastructure. The common element of these methods is the fact that they are triggered by end user engagement. While such supplyside reporting is essential, CanVAS SmartCoverage provides a complementary approach to report end user presence information, even when there is no engagement.
CanVAS® SmartCoverage™ provides business intelligence generated from the location profiling of end users who are targeted for data plans. This location profiling generates invaluable insight for network planners since it includes targeted end users’ presence and concentration information. Network planners can use this information for discovering potential demand in locations that are not yet upgraded with 3G or LTE. They can also see indications of low demand in locations where the network has already been upgraded.
CanVAS SmartCoverage is a member of the CanVAS Location portfolio. It is a location-based network optimization service that provides network planners the ability to make better informed capital investment decisions through location-based end user profiling and report generation. By generating
density maps of hot spots of specified subscribers, CanVAS SmartCoverage helps network planners to further optimize cell deployment and invest where it makes most business sense.

3. Benefits
Capital Investment Optimization
CanVAS® SmartCoverage™ provides business intelligence assistance for optimizing the capital budget requirements
for 3G/LTE coverage expansion through location profiling of selected subscribers. It provides service providers
a different angle in understanding their network and help decide where to deploy new sites/cells and defer the
planned deployments on the locations which are not under traffic load.
Generate Density Maps of Network Load
CanVAS SmartCoverage generates density maps visualizing actual network load and usage through location profiling
of targeted subscribers.
Demand-side Reporting
Demand-side reporting refers to data that is driven from the movement of subscribers with smart or feature phones
regardless of whether they use mobile data or not. Their physical presence, and where that presence is concentrated,
implies potential demand. Physical presence is not collected momentarily but rather over a period of time resulting
in contextual information with regards to end user behavior.
4. Product Overview
CanVAS® SmartCoverage™ receives a list of target subscriber MSISDNs from the service provider for geographical profiling
analysis. The targeted subscribers can be those users with smart or feature phones, users above a certain level of ARPU,
etc. A common scenario is to work with a segment of smartphone users without data plans and at above-average ARPU
levels. Selecting a sufficiently large sample of such users creates a statistically significant set of end users who are likely to
subscribe to data plans/services. The service provider then operates CanVAS SmartCoverage to track the locations of these
subscribers to determine a density map of their whereabouts. By comparing the density map with the actual network
coverage quality map, the service provider can determine:
1. Locations without 3G/LTE coverage, yet frequently visited by the target group. Clearly, the service provider
will consider accelerating rollout plans for these areas,
2. Locations with weak 3G/LTE coverage, yet frequently visited by the target group. Service provider can consider
adding new cells/sites to improve the coverage quality for offering better data services,
3. Locations with no 3G/LTE coverage and also, not frequently visited by the target group. The service provider
is expected to consider postponing new deployments in such areas.
CanVAS SmartCoverage may also produce reports that point out areas with strong 3G/LTE coverage that are also frequently
visited by the target group. This underlines that these areas have been well planned and deployed for 3G/LTE services. If,
however, actual usage data (measured on existing reports) is surprisingly low, this may indicate an awareness problem
about 3G/LTE, a device compatibility problem, a first-impression disappointment leading to lack of interest or a pricing
problem with regards to data plans and services. CanVAS SmartCoverage reporting can be used in conjunction with existing
reports and the sections below describe how CanVAS SmartCoverage operates:
Operator Data Import
Network optimization starts by importing data including MSISDN lists and discriminating cell information. MSISDN lists may
include 2G or 3G subscribers and/or high value subscribers having data plans or subscribers without data plans. According
to operator aim, target list characteristics may change. Cell data information and exact location of these cells in terms of
latitude and longitude (x, y) will also be imported into the CanVAS SmartCoverage cell database.
5. Data Generation and Location Profiling
Once MSISDN list and cell data is ready, CanVAS SmartCoverage starts to generate location profiles of the target list by
using CanVAS LocusProfiler. CanVAS LocusProfiler is the location profiling engine used in CanVAS SmartCoverage. CanVAS
LocusProfiler leverages the CanVAS LCMW to connect to operator’s GMLCs or HLRs. In case of GMLC; it is interoperable with
all GMLC vendors via OMA MLP v3.2 and MPP v5.0. At the end of tracking and location collection, CanVAS LocusProfiler
generates density map of the target list by using enhanced profiling algorithms.
Network Optimization Analysis
In the Network Optimization Analysis layer density map of the network is overlaid with the present 3G/LTE data coverage
map. CanVAS SmartCoverage compares the location density of the target group with the coverage of the network and
analyses coverage by using location data collected by CanVAS LocusProfiler. The next step is the optimization of the coverage
by using optimization reports generated by CanVAS SmartCoverage.
Network Optimization Reporting
Reports are generated in the reporting layer as a result of network optimization analysis. With these reports service provider
will be able to understand their network and have a wide picture of the network coverage. Analyzing these reports will give
a new perspective to service providers to optimize their network investments with the support of their actual subscribers.
