  • ZoloftWhat is Zoloft?Zoloft is an oral antidepressant prescribed to patients with major depression, and disorders suchas obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD); post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD); premenstrualdysphoric disorder (PMDD) and social anxiety disorder, also known as social phobia. Zoloft is thebest medication to relieve anxiety, insomnia, and psychomotor agitation accompanied withdepression. Sertraline hydrochloride is the generic name of Zoloft.How does Zoloft work?Depressive and anxiety symptoms are triggered when there is a chemical imbalance in the brain.Thus, it results to a disruption of neurotransmitters or chemical messengers of the brain. Thismedication acts on serotonin, permitting a flow of electrical messages to be processed moreeasily, thereby relieving depression symptoms.Drug Class and MechanismZoloft is included in a drug class called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs. Thismedication is said to produce fewer side effects than other types of antidepressant medications.These side effects are considered mild and manageable by patients. Although favorable effectsof medications differ from one person to another, Zoloft may be more appropriate for somepeople than other antidepressants.How is Zoloft taken?Zoloft should be taken exactly as directed by your doctor. You can also refer to your medicalguide for more information. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain to you any part of theinstructions that you don’t understand.Take each tablet with a glass of water. If you are using the Oral Concentrate, dilute themedication first. Use a medicine dropper to measure a dose of a liquid. Mix the prescribedamount with ½ cup (4oz) of water. You can use other liquids but only limited to the following:ginger ale, lemon or lime soda, lemonade or orange juice. A small haze is just normal aftermixing. Drink the mixture right away and avoid saving the diluted concentrate for future use.
  • Take Zoloft at the same time each day. Zoloft can also be taken with or without food. Do notstop taking the medication without consulting your doctor first. Stopping the medicationabruptly can trigger unpleasant side effects. Improvements in your condition can be felt after 4or more weeks of taking the medication.StorageStore your medication at room temperature away from excess heat and moisture. Keep in a safeplace where children cannot reach the medications.Side EffectsMost common side effects of Zoloft include nausea, diarrhea or loose stools, tremor, insomnia,drowsiness, dry mouth, headache, tremor, nervousness, anxiety, change in appetite and weight,insomnia, increased sweating and sexual problems. Continue to take the medication and talk toyour doctor.Stop taking Zoloft and seek emergency medical help as soon as possible if you experience any ofthe following side serious effects:• an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, orface; or hives);• an irregular heartbeat or pulse;• low blood pressure (dizziness, weakness);• high blood pressure (severe headache, blurred vision); or• chills or fever.Warnings and Precautions• Zoloft cannot be taken in combination with antidepressants called MAOIs or monoamineoxidase inhibitors. This can cause adverse drug reactions and could be fatal. Allow 14 days ofinterval before switching from Zoloft to a MAOI or vice versa.• Tell your doctor if you have been using any of the following medications: benzodiazepines;alprazolam; chlordiazepoxide; clorazepate; temazepam triazolam and other similar medications;tricyclic antidepressants; phenothiazine; lithiums or clozapines; almotriptan; frovatriptan,sumatriptan; naratriptan; rizatriptan or zolmitriptan; carbamazepine or phenytoin; warfarin;
  • digoxin; cimetidine; and bupropion. You may not be advised to take Zoloft or may be required tohave your dosage amount adjusted or be carefully monitored during treatment. Be sure to alsomention to your doctor of any prescription or nonprescription medications including vitamins,supplements and herbal products you are taking.• Do not take Zoloft if you are using pimozide (Orap). It can cause a lethal drug reaction.• Let your doctor know if you have liver disease; kidney disease; suffer seizures; or suffer frommania or have suicidal thoughts.• Zoloft is under the FDA pregnancy category C. It is unknown presently whether it can affect anunborn child. Consulting your doctor is important if you are pregnant or become pregnantduring the treatment period.• It is also not known if Zoloft passes into breast milk. Avoid taking Zoloft without first talking toyour doctor.• Alcohol may increase drowsiness and dizziness in taking this medication. Use it in moderation.• Take caution when doing activities that need you to be alert and awake like driving a vehicle oroperating machinery. Zoloft can make you drowsy or dizzy.• Seek immediate medical attention if you suspect an overdose. Overdose symptoms includenausea, vomiting, tremors, seizures, agitation, drowsiness, hyperactivity and enlarged pupils.
