An Introduction To Matter - Presentation Transcript

    1. An Introduction to Matter By Kate
    2. What is matter?
      • Matter is stuff. Everything is made of matter. You, your chair, your clothes, your food, everything! Any thing that takes up space.
      • Matter can be alive or dead.
      • Matter can be solid like wood, liquid like milk or gas like steam.
      • Matter is made up of tiny parts called atoms.
    3. What is made of matter?
      • List five things:
      • 1.
      • 2.
      • 3.
      • 4.
      • 5.
    4. Matter can be alive or dead!
      • Alive or Animate
      • People
      • Animals
      • Insects
      • Plants and Trees
      • Dead or Inanimate
      • Wood
      • Metal
      • Paper
      • Plastic
    5. Is it alive or dead?
    6. Solid – the mug Liquid – the coffee Gas – the Steam States of Matter
    7. What State is It In? Apple Juice Scissors
    8. Magic Water
      • When water freezes
      • Or water boils,
      • It gets a different name,
      • It turns to ice,
      • It turns to steam,
      • But it's water just the same!
    9. States of Matter for Water Liquid Solid Steam
    10. Why does matter change from one state to another?
      • Because of changes in temperature!
    11. What happens when the temp changes?
      • Atoms in solids stay close together with not much movement, like people sitting in a theater.
      • As atoms become hotter they begin to flow past each other like people in a crowd on the street, becoming liquids .
      • With more heat, the atoms separate from one another and bounce around in space like fast-moving dancers. This is the gaseous stage .
