There are hundreds of crowdfunding platforms to choose from and thousands of nonprofit crowdfunding campaigns for people to support. It takes more than just a few clicks to create a successful crowdfunding campaign, so how do you ensure you do it well?

Whelena Sainsbury, volunteer and creator of Not Far From the Tree’s crowdfunding campaign, co-lead a workshop on crowdfunding at Toronto Net Tuesday on October 8th, 2013. Whelena shared successes and lessons learned from her crowdfunding experience, and practical tips for nonprofits to successfully complete their crowdfunding campaign.

  • Not Far From The Tree puts Toronto’s wealth of local fruit to good use by picking and sharing the bounty. Tucked away in backyards and along alleyways, Toronto’s urban forest is teeming with fruit trees. Approximately 1.5 million pounds of fruit are produced from our urban canopy every year, and yet most of this goes unpicked. Not Far From The Tree came to life in 2008 as a bright and hopeful solution to this surplus of local fruit. Volunteers are mobilized to harvest the fruit and then the bounty is shared: a third to the homeowner; a third to the volunteers; and a third is delivered by cargo bike to a neighbourhood social service agency, such as a food bank, shelter or community kitchen. It’s a win-win-win solution.
