  • 3. .Project title: ILT course Catalog Background: Course catalog is Academic courses that have a listing of academic courses, policies and related information such as: Michigan State University catalog. Of course, Students must consult their advisors to learn which specific requirements apply to their degree programs. As we know that, Sultan Qaboos University has Academic Information which has Courses Description for all courses in all colleges but in very general way. This project will create an electronic catalog for ILT department & its courses. Moreover, this project will include GPA calculator. As we know a transcript is an official copy of a student's academic record). Also, this project will include a forum that allows learners to participate and share opinions with each other. Project Over view: There are many students in ILT department & in graduate schools don’t know many information about ILT department purpose & its courses especially first year students & graduate schools students. ILT course Catalog Program proposed to makes students aware of their major & its courses and makes graduate school students aware of this major if they want to join to it in future. Project feature: This program works by entering the course code in a blank box and click search which will help students in getting information's about: - department course : • Course name. • Total teaching hour. • Total credit hour. - Course description. - Course objectives. - Course content. - Course assessment. - Common questions in the department. 3

At first, when you entering to this catalog you will see a copyright & then you will see a short description about ILT department, then click enter to go to the main page, you will face a menu which has some buttons about: a total credit hours, department course, Course description, Course objectives, Course content, Course assessment, Common questions in the department, button about the needed program, important e-mails in the department button, forum & a help or instruction button. Also this program has the ability of remove, update and add course by instructor through using this user name: tec & password: 111. Moreover, this program provides the ability to calculate student GPA. The project outcomes: As a result I choose this program because of its benefits which help students in: • Increase student’s awareness in Chosen their courses. • Make them aware of the prerequisites courses. • Make students aware of his major and what he is joining to study. • Make students aware about the objectives of the ILT major in SQU. • Answers many common questions about ILT major & its courses. • This program have the ability of: Update the data and add or drop any courses by instructor & Update the date of E-Mail and add or drop any E-mail by students. • Allow students to calculate their GAP. • Make students aware about different types of courses. • Allow students to interact with each others through ILT department forum. Needs Analysis: Used Tools: Observation & my own experience: I had study in college of education for more than 4 years & I had noticed that students & I am one of them doesn’t know any thing a bout ILT department & its courses. In many courses, I & my friends were very distracted in choosing our courses because we didn’t know any thing about our courses at first .also we didn’t know what 4
  • 5. is the prerequisite courses for many courses. We faced a lot of problem when we register to some courses. More over, when I was in the Internship on Salalah many students in schools ask me about my major & most of them didn’t know any thing about ILT major & they want to know more. (Appendixe2): I had made a short questioner to know how big the problem is & I had found that: • Most students in ILT department had a difficulty when they want to choose what course they will take. • Many of first year students have a little information about ILT Department. • Most students in ILT department don’t know what they will study in the future in their courses. • Students like to have an electronic catalog rather than printed material. (Appendixe3): • Students like to have an easy way to calculate their GPA. • Many Students don’t know how to differentiate between different types of courses. • Many students don’t know what is the difference between Information Technology Teacher & Learning Resources Center Specialist. • Many students like to have a forum that enables them to interact with each others to share their experience. Interview (Appendixe1): I conducted interviews with my colleagues in ILT department; they strongly agree that they need to know more information about their courses and the prerequisite courses. One student said that:" when I was in my first year a lot of things appear to be strange & difficult to understand, no clear view," Other said: "I am now in my first year & many things in my major I don’t know about it". 5
  • 6. Problem statement: A lot of students don’t understand many of primary things in ILT Department and don’t know any information about courses they will take. Also, some graduate students in schools want to know more about the work in ILT Department & its purposed. Actual state: Many students in ILT department don’t know any information about courses they will take. Also, students in graduate schools want to know more information's about ILT Department & its courses. I choose this project because I observe that most students in ILT department (specially first year students ) and graduate schools students are confuse and distract when they want to join to some courses (ILT students ) or when they want to join after school graduation to ILT department . The information about ILT department in schools is not enough to guide the students and not enough to answer many questions that asked by ILT department students because of these reasons: • Lack information about ILT department courses. • Lack of information that gives to students about each course when they join to ILT major or to students in graduate schools. • Lack of guides about some questions that students always asked about them. As a result of these reasons many problems appear such as: • Confused in chosen courses. • Confused to join to ILT major after graduating from school. • Poor information about prerequisite courses for each course. • Lack information when entering SQU, about ILT Courses. Desired status: • Desired state is to make students more understandable about his/her major by having more specific & general information's about his/her major & courses. • Also, schools graduate students should know about ILT major & ILT courses before joining to SQU. all students should know about each course name ,Total teaching hour, Total credit hour ,each 6
  • 7. Course description ,objectives, content, assessment & Common questions in the department to be more comfortable about his major & to be not afraid in the beginning of study any course . Gab: Most students who join to ILT department and who want to join to it don’t have any information about ILT department courses or misunderstand ILT major. Summary of the Needs Analysis: Actual state: Most students In ILT department & schools graduate students don’t know any :Gab information about courses. Most students who join . to ILT department and who want to join to it don‘t have any information about ILT department courses or Desired state: misunderstand ILT .major Make students aware by know general and specific information about ILT Department & each course in it.   • 8. Reasons of the problem: I figure out this problem by observation & interview because I know the situation as a student in ILT department and through interviews with some students. The reasons are: • Lack information's about ILT department & its work when student join to ILT major in his first year. • Lack of information that gives to students in schools about ILT Department & its courses. • Lack information about different types of courses in ILT department. Suggested solutions: In order to fill the gap and achieve the desired status, which will help students to be more aware about their courses & to be more awareness about choosing there future major (schools students), I have suggested the coming solutions: • School Teachers should expose students a bout ILT major & its courses when students want to join to ILT major. • ILT Advisor in SQU should Give more information about each course in ILT department in the first year for each students. • Demonstrate common questions and its answers, which students always asked in ILT department for all students because, may, they will face it in future soon. • Designing a database that contain information's about ILT department , its courses , common questions that always asked & ability of program to update , remove , add ,delete information's for future use & GPA calculator. • Add a forum to the catalog to enable learners to share their opinions & experiences. The Implemented Solution: - The solution is to design a database that contain the ILT overview, ILT objectives ,department course (Course name, Total teaching hour, Total credit hour),Course description, Course objectives, 8
  • 9. Course content, Course assessment, Common questions in the department, & some important e-mails in the department. Moreover, I will design a GPA calculator & I will link it to the main page. Of course, this program will have a link to a forum. Also, this program provide for instructor the ability to add a new course to the database or to modify or delete courses before distributed on CDs as a stand- alone software that is installed on students own computers & laptops . - Also, advisor can upload ILT Catalog program to internet as example, ٤shared web site, to make it reachable for all students. The reasons for adopting these solutions are: The ILT course Catalog will be delivered though CDs flash or through the internet for the following advantages (ACTIONS model): • Accessibility: It’s easy to access for all students either from CD, flash or internet (Ease to use as a stand alone). • Costs: it doesn’t cost any thing in comparing with traditional printed materials. It just can be downloaded for free or gives to student through his flash or a CD (ONE CD can cost only ٢٠٠ paisa) in contrast with printed materials which cost papers and ink and more money to publish books about ILT department & its courses. • Teaching and Learning: (constructivism approach) because it enables students to searching among courses & getting information's about each course by using the CD , flash or internet .students can also save any e-mail they want & they can calculate their GPA by them self . • Interactivity and User-friendliness: Its student-machine interactions & student-content interaction (by searching, add, remove and delete e-mail, using GPA Calculator, participate in forum) .users can copy text from program about any courses & students can build their own experience through interaction by using online forum. ILT course Catalog program design is user-friendliness with a clear direction & instructions .it also enables instructor to add, delete , modify courses . 9
  • 10. • Organizational Issues: the program can reduce the pressure that teachers and doctors always faced by students especially at the beginning of any courses (students asking). • Novelty: the idea of making ILT course Catalog program is new. • Speed: the database or ILT course Catalog program can be distributed through the internet, through teachers or advisor by (CD & FLASH) in a fast way without distractions. Instructional goal analysis: Instructional goal: This catalog aim to: increase students’ awareness & knowing about ILT Department & its courses. Instructional objectives: After using ILT course Catalog, students should be able to: • Demonstrate general information about ILT Department. • Demonstrate general & specific information about ILT Department courses. • Identify total teaching and credit hour of each course in ILT department. • Gain information about the objectives and the content of each course in ILT Department. • Make students aware of the assessment of each course in ILT Department. • Answer the most common questions that faced students in ILT Department. • Match between the ILT courses & its Requirement Courses. • Identify each course in ILT department correctly. • Search among Catalog for courses. 10

They are from ILT department & from graduate .school Of course, all students have different culture which will be considered .when designing the catalog General learning preferences: • Learners prefer to have digital catalog than printed materials because it can facilitate the process of searching about any courses. • They like to see common questions a bout ILT courses through the catalog. • Learners like to calculate their GPA by them self. Social characteristic: Students can review the content individually or in a group. For example: SQU Students or school students can see it in their own computer or laptops or they can see it in a group through projector & LCD panel. Learner characteristics: Motivation: Students have positive motivation to know more about ILT Department courses and they like to know answers about some questions they always asked about it. They like to have the opportunity to calculate their GPA in easy way & to contact with each other to share opinions by using a forum. Audience level: ILT department students (SQU University) & graduate school students. Entry behaviors (Students prerequisites): • Motivation to know more about ILT courses. • Positive attitude toward ILT major. • Have reading skills. • Computer operation skills. • Using the mouse. • Typing through the keyboard. 13
  • 14. • Ability to run up a CD and copy the program to C driver. • Ability to use the internet. • Computer should have Access & Excel programs to run up the CD. • Ability to navigate/browse among the database. Prior knowledge in topic area: From my observation and interviews I had noted that many students in ILT department don’t know any information about ILT courses. Also some .students don’t know the prerequisite courses Attitudes towards content and potential delivery system: • Learners believe that catalog will help them to know more about ILT department & its courses. • Instructors prefer to have the ability to remove, modify & adding courses for future used. • Students want to have the control over the database, it can build their confidence. • Students like to calculate their GPA & grade by them self. • Students like to interact with each other through forum. Academic motivation (ARCS): • Attention: ILT students & school graduate students can gain their attentions by using different color and good background, through GPA calculator, data about time & date, through forum & through instructions that provided to them. • Relevance: courses are related to students study or that they will study in ILT departments in the future. • Confidence: instructors can modify courses, add a new course or delete a course if the department add or remove any courses. Also, students can copy text from the program & paste it to MS word program. Also, they can add e-mails of instructors & their friends. Moreover, they can calculate their GPA. These can encourage students to be responsible of their learning. 14
  • 15. • Satisfaction: when the students find all what they need to know about ILT department and its courses & a bout some common questions they want to know. Also, when students have the ability to calculate their GPA & interact to each other through the Forum these can make satisfaction from learners to the program. Attitudes towards training organization: We assume that the students have trust to get benefits from the information that included in the CD. Analysis of learning context: Environment: ILT Department and Graduation schools. Distributed points: • ILT Department student in SQU. • All graduation schools in Oman. I will give graduation schools in Oman a copy of the CD to present it in their schools. In my opinion, it is very helpful idea if the students watch this CD before join to ILT Department in SQU. Requirement to use CD: Laptop/desktop, operate the computer 15
  • 16. • Students can use the CD in any where, any time and with their own pace. • It is flexible because, they don’t need any specific time, or place to run &| use it. • Computer should have Access & Excel program to run up the program. Resources: • I need some assistance from ILT Department (Subject matter expert). • Instructor. • Technician. • I need some resources from the internet. • I need some assistance from ILT students to know the common questions. • I need some assistance from “Amal AL-Ibrahime “specialist in IT. Also students in schools can operate this CD through school labs. • All computers in college of education have internet connection & if instructor uploads the program in the internet, students can also login to download the program through the internet or through wireless that provided in SQU. Moreover, nowadays most schools in Oman have internet connections & a lot of students have internet in their house which can be used to download the program. Social aspects of • Gender: Males & Females • Age: Above 16 years. the site • Economic: different economic levels because the number of the target population is so large • Cultural: Most students are Omani, but there are some other Arab cultures in the target audience.   • 18. program & MS Word program. • Resource: This project needs: o SQU Site for gathering information about the prerequisites ILT courses. o Laptop for developing the database. o Help from friend. o CDs for distributing the program to the learners. o Assistance from some teachers & doctors. o High speed internet connections. • Constraints - If the students are not from Arab countries, it will be difficult to them to read the CD, because CD is designed by Arabic language. • Maybe some students have negative attitude of using technology. o I had face a lot of problem in writing the code in visual basic program & I had need some help from my friend & D. Hamed especially when I had writing the update code & when I want to link different program to visual basic program . o Moreover, I had facing difficulties when designing GPA in MS Excel program. Students can use the program when they want to Calculate their GPA also when they need some advice from learners & instructor by using the forum. • Delivery Approaches: I will deliver my project by: • CD and it should be downloading on C driver to run up. Each student will have a CD Because CD is: • Portable. • Flexible. • Compatible. • Can be use any time, any place. • Easy to access. • Easy to use. Also all students & instructors will have the ability of downloading the catalog from the net (4SHARED) or they can take it through flash it’s an easy way to purplish this program through students & it doesn’t cost any things. • Time This catalog can be used in any time any place without stick to time or place. Also, It can be used in any time in the future because it has the feature of updating, adding & deleting courses (this program not limited for just now it can use in future). • Personnel It is self-paced. Site compatibility • Location: with learner needs It can be used in any place for example 19

Interactivity Student- program interact: because students can navigate among the program. Its student- content interacts: because students can modify, delete, add e-mails. Also they can calculate their own GPA for all year of their studying. Content Sequence At beginning you will see the copy right of product, then small introduction about ILT Department. In menu page you will read about department objectives & You can see courses descriptions through entering its course code and click search to find course descriptions this can be facilitate searching process. Media Selection The data base will be distributed through CD or Internet or students flash because of this reasons : • Cost: it will just cost the price of CD witch can cost only 2 paisa of each CD. • Accessibility: it’s easy to access either from CD or flash or through downloading the program from internet. • Social and Political Suitability: the use of CDs is legible in Oman. • Flexibility: CD & FLASH are portable media and it’s flexible in using it. • Effectiveness: because learners can easy use CD to navigate the program & found courses descriptions by entering course code. 22

  • 24. • Access program: is a relational database management system from Microsoft, packaged with Microsoft Office Professional which combines the relational Microsoft Jet Database Engine with a graphical user interface. • Visual basic 6 program: is a programming language and development environment created by Microsoft. It is an extension of the BASIC programming language that combines BASIC functions and commands with visual controls. Visual Basic provides a graphical user interface GUI that allows the developer to drag and drop objects into the program as well as manually write program code. • Photoshop program: Image editing software developed and manufactured by Adobe Systems Inc. Photoshop is considered one of the leaders in photo editing software. The software allows users to manipulate, crop, resize, and correct color on digital photos. The software is particularly popular amongst professional photographers. • AAA Logo program: AAA Logo can create almost any type of website graphics or business graphics for high resolution printing. Logos, banners, buttons, headers and icons for your website with rich colors, gradients, shadows and reflections. • CRYSTAL Report program: Crystal Reports is a popular Windows- based report writer (report generation program) that allows a programmer to create reports from a variety of data sources with a minimum of written code. • MS Excel program: is a spreadsheet application written and distributed by Microsoft for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. It features calculation, graphing tools, pivot tables and a macro programming language called VBA (Visual Basic for Applications). Ali AL-Mosawi about ILT department and its plan he had send me an e-mail about all information's I was needed . • Second, I had Get information from SQU website about ILT department & its prerequisites courses. • Searching for a photo of SQU tour through Google image search. • Make an interview with some ILT students to know what they need in the program. • Gathering some visual basic code from internet. • Reading websites about how to link MS Access with visual basic program. • I faced some problem in visual basic so , I had a help from my friend " Amal AL-Ibrahim " a specialist in IT in how to link some code of visual basic to access & how to Moving from a form to another . • I had Design the background by using Adobe Photoshop program. • I had Design the logo for the program by using AAA logo program • Organized text box & label in visual basic form it was easy. • Then I had but a button to HOME page, search, adding, delete, modify, exit & six button in menu page. • After that I had Link MS Access with visual basic program in all forms, I had faced a lot of difficulties in this stage & I had make a lot of calls to my friend Amal in Salalah to tell me what is the problem I faced now . • After that I had arrange the buttons, forms in a good design. • Change text font, size, button color & background. • After that I had prepare questioner & interview. • Then I had make interviews with some students & collect the questioner. 25
  • 26. • I had mailed D.Ali AL-Mosawi & ask him some answers about some common questions I had collected from different students. • Then, adding the data to the database. • After that I had go to Dr. Hamd Nasr office asking him about how to link the ILT plan in MS Word program to visual basic program. He was very helpful to me. • Then I had go to Dr. Alaa' Sadik, I had show him my product. He suggested me to add GPA calculator to make the product more interactive for learners. • After that I had made some mathematical operation in a paper a bout how to calculate GPA. It was difficult to me. So I decide to ask a help from D. Ali Mohammed Ibrahim. He told me about some important role in calculating GPA. • Then I had implement the mathematical operation through EXCEL &| it was difficult I had spent a lot of time to fix it. But I still have some problem with IF function so I decided to go to get a help from CET. • I had meet Saood AL-Hashmi the head of the administrative & financial systems division he give an appointment on Monday. Then I had met him in Monday he was very kind & helpful after that he mail me about some instruction that had help me. • Then I had edit the designs of MS excel program (GPA). • Make to it some instructions in PhotoShop program & then paste it in other excels spread sheet. • Then I had taken some information from D. Alaa Sadik program of Eight_New Sem Degree Plan about courses types (elective, major & so on). He had e-mail my his project. • I had place the information in MS excel program & arrange it in a good way. • Then I had link it to the visual basic program & link the GPA spread sheet to the main page in Visual basic. 26
  • 27. • After that, I had gone through Google to read about some visual basic application & I was interested on how to add a watch to the main page. • I try to add different codes to add clock but most of them was failed. • Finally, I had found the correct code & use it to add a clock time & date to the main page. • Then I decide to use www.ahlamontada.net site to make an online forum. • Then I had design it’s a background & buttons by Photoshop. It takes a lot of time to upload background, image & buttons because of internet connection. • Finally, I had save my project by ILT Course catalog name. Evaluation: Formative Evaluation: Experts' Revision: This program has been revised by a professor in ILT Department (specialist with databases). The Dr. Alaa' Sadik , he suggested me to make a user name & password for the ability to add , remove & modify course to be used just by instructors & doctors in ILT Department . Also, he advice me to produce a GPA calculator in MS Excel program to make the project more interactive. Students Reaction: One of my colleagues gives me an opinion to make a page for common questions that faced students in the ILT department. She said that they need more specific information's about courses. 27

Also, they advice me to include not just courses but also information’s about ILT department. Constraints & Challenges: • Technical challenges: I had face difficulties in : o Using visual basic at a first time was very difficult. o Linking the database in access to visual basic. o I had face difficulties specially in writing update code & time clock code. o I had face difficulties when I want to link the plan of ILT department in MS Word to visual basic program. 29
