  • 1. Manchester mHealth EcosystemRuth NorrismHealth Innovation Centre, University of Manchester19th October 2012
  • 2. Why mHealth?• Need for a step change: – ageing population – increasing healthcare burden/cost – personalisation/stratification – self-care and independent living• Opportunity - mobile technology: – commoditised, ubiquitous – personalised, socialised – any time, any place – real-time – context-aware
  • 3. mHealth – Transformative• mHealth interventions offer: – collaboration and workflow – information at the point of care – monitoring and targeting intervention – influencing behaviour – supporting self-care• Key outcomes: – improved quality of care – enhanced patient/citizen experience – reduced cost of care
  • 4. But…• ‘Successful’ trials, poor adoption• Systematic weaknesses – Poor understanding of needs – ‘Point’ vs whole system approach – Barriers to user acceptance – Underdeveloped business models – Lack of sustainability planning – Short term partnerships leading to limited commitment – Lack of critical mass• Need for a new approach…
  • 5. mHealth Ecosystem• Multi-sector partnership of critical mass – shared commitment to accelerate adoption• Innovation factory – co-development of innovative whole-system solutions• Route from pilots to routine practice – co-developed pilot-to-adoption business plans, evidence• Reduced barriers to new deployments – large, diverse, ‘instrumented’ study population – stage-gated deployments & shared risk models
