  • 1. “ Rackspace: Smart Management for Cloud-Based Applications ” Conference session by Sergey Sundukovskiy Today, many companies explore the wide-ranging possibilities offered by Cloud Compu- ting. One of the most important decisions to make during the Cloud evaluation process is the selection of an appropriate Cloud Vendor. The top industry vendors, such as Amazon EC2, Rackspace, Salesforce.com, Microsoft Azure, GoGrid, and Google Application En- gine, provide quite different capabilities, product offerings, and maturity. It is not easy to look beyond their marketing claims to understand what the true value is. This session is going to discuss how to choose a Cloud Provider, and how to deploy Cloud projects in a typical Business Environment. SESSION DESCRIPTION While attending this session, you will get expert advice on the Cloud Vendor selection pro- cess. This session will go into the detailed evaluation of Rackspace as the vendor of choice. The speaker will review the capabilities it offers to various businesses and some challenges one may face when deploying a Cloud project. AGENDA  What is Rackspace Cloud? The Rackspace Cloud is a Cloud Platform provider that allows for hosting Web appli- cations and allocating dedicated servers. Rackspace Cloud supports both Windows and various distributions of Linux (including Arch, CentOS, Debian, Fedora, Gentoo, Red Hat, and Ubuntu). Support for PHP, Perl, Python, MySQL, .NET, and Microsoft SQL Server is also included for Cloud Sites. At the beginning of the session, the speaker will give a brief overview of Rackspace Cloud and review its basic features.  Why Rackspace Cloud? The speaker will focus on the advantages this Cloud vendor offers. You will learn how the storage with Rackspace Cloud Servers is directly attached and persistent. The session will touch upon Rackspace’s scaling model, explaining how to run additional resources with one click, just choosing whether to scale up or down. Considering verti- cal extensibility, attendees will learn how Cloud Servers can be resized to scale up or down without any reinstallation. The speaker will also cover Rackspace’s offerings for large deployments, including hybrid solutions and mixing-and-matching VPS instances with dedicated servers.
  • 2. “ Rackspace: Smart Management for Cloud-Based Applications ” Conference session by Sergey Sundukovskiy The session will describe how each Rackspace Cloud Server comes with the simplicity of a dedicated and persistent public IP address with a second, private IP address. Having low latency bandwidth between Cloud Servers and private IP addresses, this addresses the clustering aspect, since these IPs are the junction points for the cluster slices. To couple them together and load balance, either the capabilities of a Web server, a round robin on DNS level, or the clustering capabilities of the management panel are employed. Finally, the speaker will demonstrate a set of tools Cloud Servers have to make man- aging Сloud servers easier, including Web-based console access, bootable rescue mode, snapshot-based Cloud Server backups (available as an option), and authorita- tive DNS hosting and management (provided at no cost).  Rackspace Cloud Recommended Use In the course of the session, attendees will learn how Rackspace can be of use to Cloud developers who need affordable storage space and are starving for bandwidth, while having no time to manage application instances themselves. You will study how Cloud Sites allow you to have instances managed for you by the Rackspace team; as well as how you can manage instances yourself—still getting support—with Cloud Servers. The session will dwell on how Rackspace Cloud Servers can satisfy the needs of small, growing, and large businesses, depending on a server plan, starting at 256 MB and going up to 16 GB. The speaker will focus on selecting the most appro- priate combination of a Cloud Vendor coupled with suitable Cloud products for differ- ent Business and Technology needs.  Rackspace Cloud Challenges At the end of the session, the speaker will discuss some of the challenges Rackspace implementation provides, including working with Django, Ruby on Rails, and SSH. Since Rackspace Servers for Windows is a beta offering currently and SLA around the product is still not offered, you will learn about the issues associated with running pro- duction workloads or applications at this time. The session will touch upon the usage of SSH for a system administrator, including advanced administration, and the bottle- necks Rackspace Cloud Sites provide without SSH access support to the prejudice of accessibility for security reasons. Finally, you will be able to participate in a question-and-answer session, discussing the challenges related to your specific Cloud Computing needs.
