  1. 1. Ayurveda Nutriceuticals in Genitourinary Tract disorders OrDietary Preventive and Curative aspects of Genitourinary Tract disorders Dr. K. Shiva Rama PrasadNATIONAL SEMINAR ON TRADITIONAL INDIAN DIETS AND HEALTH CARE Jointly organized by - Institute of Scientific Research on Vedas & National Institute of Nutrition - on 4th & 5th February, 2010 At NIN, Hyderabad, Andhara Pradesh
  2. 2. Importance of Food• Food can cause as well as health and Disease• Food in health is choice & in disease compulsory• Tasty Foods helps disease to grow rather than body• Healthy mind takes healthy foods• Scientifically best foods also have no action on bad mind – it helps the disease than human• Foods – does they improve health or disease?• Scientific foods taste is questionable• How food prevent the disease?• Present situation of Ayurveda is – hanging between holistic approaches and scientific methods• The difference is – as Ayurvedic Ghee – from curd is healthy and scientifically developed diary raw milk Ghee is unhealthy
  3. 3. Introduction• Ayurveda is • A question here is – “whether the Ayurveda is considered by the a “Medicine” or “Food” western community as • If, the Ayurveda is food – “Food” and marketed why the Food faculties with a label of “Food like NIN doesn’t involve Items” Ayurveda graduates –• Normally food is in a • If it is a medicine – why huge quantity and for the dignity of equality is not provided by the development of body Government• Where in the Medicine • The questions are is always in a small endless and without quantity and restores answers – remains as the health from questions disease
  4. 4. My topic –Genitourinary Tract Foods in Ayurveda• Ayurveda is based on 3 Dosha – 7 Dhatu and 3 Mala• Genitourinary tract includes – – 1 Dhatu i.e. Sukra/ Artava (progeny tissue) & – 1 Mala i.e. Mootra (urine) – Where three humors – Vata, Pitta and Kapha generates the pathology with etiology of Food, Regimen and Seasonal effects – In which Kapha makes more diseases here in GUT
  5. 5. What is common?• The common is water –• The water in the body eliminated as Urine is the liquid part of the food i.e. Rasa-Ambu of Udaka• The products of GUT are urine and semen are under the influence of Kapha and Udaka
  6. 6. Disorders of GUT• As the elements involved are two –• Diseases are of – – Sukra/ Artava (progeny tissue) disorders & – Mootra (urine) disorders• As a concept of Ayurveda not only uses the Food to build and rejuvenate the Tissue• Even by-product or waste of food is also used as Medicine and also building the tissue• The bulk food in many forms becomes as buffers to alter the medicine real effect or fortify• Many foods of a province is noticed as medicine in different province• Thus, it is necessary to identify the materials and promote as food medicines• The best example is Garcinia is used to get sour taste in food is a best medicine for GUT inflammation and Obesity
  7. 7. “Let Food be Your Medicine”• How come we make the Food as medicine- – To eat less as medicine or – “Focus on Prevention” through food• Ayurveda cares about the health through foods and supplements also• Ayurveda classics deal exclusive chapters on nourishment and nutritive values of the food• They describe even recipes that are useful in Disease• In disease pathogenic Channel (Srotas), selective Iso-bio-available foods are scheduled as ‘pathya’ or diet• All the Pathya are not Medicines but they become buffers of medicines
  8. 8. Pathya - Nutriceutical• Pathya is a nutritive curative diet preparation could be termed as Nutriceuticals.• In Ayurveda the term Nutriceuticals is explained as ‘Pathya’ and ‘Rasayana’ is better.• Still it is necessary to differentiate and demarcate these terms of use.• Nutriceutical is defined as “A food or part of food or nutrient that provides health benefits, including the prevention and treatment of a disease.”• Or - “Art and science of preparing and dispensing food as medicine in the practice of healing” ie. Pathya in Ayurveda.
  9. 9. • Nutriceuticals termed as – Non prescription products - launched by Stephen De-Felici in the 1980s.• Ayurveda described such non prescription foods embedded in management and therapeutics many centuries ago.• Nutraceuticals are from a plant, animal and microbial ingredients like in Ayurveda• Ayurveda provide a wide range of Peya, Vilepi, Manda, etc. foods• It is manipulating the diet to get maximum level of active components to treat the disease
  10. 10. Classification of Nutriceutical in comparison• Nutrients – Contemporary: Substances which have established Nutritional functions e.g. Vitamins, Minerals, Amino Acids, Fatty acids, etc. – Ayurveda: Vicharana and Peya, Vilepi, manda, etc• Herbals/ Phytochemicals – Contemporary: Herbs or Botanical products – Ayurveda: All the herbal compounds like Chyavanaprasha, Vanari, etc• Dietary Supplements – Contemporary: Probiotics, Prebiotics, Antioxidents, Enzymes, etc. – Ayurveda: Medhya, Hrudya, Chakshushya, etc
  11. 11. Pathya dravya (liquids) indicated are –• Dugdha (Gandhaka Rasayana with Milk) – The Milk is a classical lacto based linked active principle absorbent is a facilitative of cGMP in GIT and there by makes the erection with aphrodisiacs and regulates the KUB with Gandhakarasayana, etc.• Ikshurasa (Sugarcane juice in Mootrakrichra), etc. – acts as sucrose based active principle linkage, as best as for the Genitourinary Tract diseases.
  12. 12. GUT Indicated foods or Pathya• The pathology of UT is better tackled with Madhura rasa, – and the foods are - Kulutha kwatha, Ikshuras, Tanduleeya, Trapusa, Yavakshara, Mudga, Jeerna Kushmanda, Pranimamsa.• The liquids have the importance, – and Ghruta, Dugdha and Excessive water intake is indicated.• The common foods like – – Ardraka, Kadali, etc has much effect over GUT is yet not recorded anywhere
  13. 13. Contraindicatedfoods or Apathya in GUT • By the quality of the food, – the items such as Sangrahi, Vidahi, Sushka Ahara are contraindicated. • Pistanna (wheat floor) sevana, Kharjura, Shalooka, Kapitha, Jambu, etc are contraindicated
  14. 14. Preventive Food items - The grains (Dhanya /shimbi) on GUT system• Sukra vardhaka / Sukrala – increases the semen quantity – Masha (Phaseolus radiatus) – Tila (Sesamum niger) – Vastuka (Chenapadium Album) – Potaki (Bassella rubra) – Patola (padval) – Vrushyam (enhances even the conjugational effect) – Kolasimbi (black bean) - Vegetables – Arookam (pendalam [T]) – Vegetables – Kaseru (Scripus kesor) - Vegitables – Vishkira (wild birds) – Mamsa – Koshastha (shelled) – Mamsa – Plava (water birds) – Mamsa – Matsya (fish) – Mamsa – Kaschapa (turtile) - Mamsa
  15. 15. Preventive Food items - The grains (Dhanya /shimbi) on GUT system• Sukradaha hara – removes the burning sensation (infection) in seminal duct – Kulatha (Dolichos bifforus)• Sukra haram – diminishes the semen production – Chanaka (Cicar arientum)• Mootrala / Vasti shodhaka – Kushmanda (Benineasa cerifera)• Mootra sthambhaka – stops the excessive urination and improves the sphincter closure – Nishpava (Lablab valgaris) – Tila (Sesamum niger)• Ashmari hara – removes the urolitheasis – Kulatha (Dolichos bifforus)
  16. 16. Therapeutic foods or Recipies in GUT• Mutrala – – Krushara (kichidi)• Sukra vardhaka – – Kundalini (jilebi) – Nariela ksheeri (coconut kheer) – Mandaka (wheet papad) – Yava roti (roti) – Dugdha kupika (milk shake) – Chipita (pressed rice) – Tilakuttam (zinjili sweet)
  17. 17. Conclusion• There are many foods mentioned many centuries ago in Ayurveda require patenting as a part food therapeutics• All these food recipes (Mashandika) are even though practiced by the practitioners doesn’t have a proper recordings• It is the “Right Time” for making a step towards successful “Ayurveda Food Industry” to establish.• Clinical studies are made to obtain a clear differentiation of Ayurveda medicine and Food medicine.• So, "Let your food be your medicine and not to make medicine be your food" Dr. K.
