  • 1. Digital Rights Management Workshop on Digital Rights Management for the Web Sophia-Antipolis, France January 22-23, 2001 Vaughn Iverson Goals, concepts and considerations
  • 2. W3C’s DRM Opportunity
    • Open and voluntary
    • Extensible
    • Technology agnostic
    • Policy neutral
    • This language is a key part of an open DRM
    • framework focused on interoperability.
Creation of an interoperable DRM rights description language with the following properties:
  • 3. DRM Summary & Goals
    • What we don’t need:
      • A single comprehensive DRM standard
    • What we do need:
      • A flexible Framework
Goal: Create a framework that promotes interoperability, protection of copyrights, and provides individuals with choice, convenience, ease of use and a diversity of experiences while preserving individual privacy and fair use rights.
  • 4. Demands of Individuals
    • Individuals have the right to freely build, distribute and manage their own creations & collections.
    • Individuals have the right to annotate, configure, comment upon & criticize the works of others.
    • This can constitute the creation of new works worthy of the same status as the original work.
    • And, this can be accomplished by persistent reference, so that the rights of both creators are respected.
    • Amateur or Professional: Copyright law makes no distinction, and individuals will demand equal footing.
    • An interoperable Digital Item/Manifest scheme is a key mechanism for accomplishing this.
  • 5. Digital Items / Manifests
    • W3C XML-Packaging requirements called for an XML based “Manifest” format.
    • MPEG-21 has produced a Working Draft for “Digital Item Declaration”.
    • These concepts have significant overlap.
    • Such a mechanism is required for an effective DRM framework.
