• 1. State of the Union
Tic-Tac-Toe Three-in-a-Row Choice Board
Choice is an aspect of student engagement that can be planned into learning tasks. This tic-tac-toe like board is one strategy often offered by our specialists for gifted and talented education (GATE).
Compare two State of the Union Addresses or any State of the Union address and any State of the State or State of the City address.1Design a timeline showing the development of the State of the Union Address on top of the line and the American presidents on the bottom.Choose a learning task of your own. Get it approved by your teacher before you start.Write three follow up questions that you might ask Stephen Hess. Note what part of the video or other input sparked your interest in this question. Watch the Brookings Institute videocast, “The History of the State of the Union”2 NOTE: teachers please preview for appropriateness in your setting.Find the text or a videotape or podcast of a different speech you would like to know more about. Listen to the speech. Write a summary of its purpose and main points. Before the 2011 State of the Union address airs, write 3 things you think the President will discuss. Describe several ways that the State of the Union Addresses have changed over time and state at least three ways that you think future addresses will differ from today’s.Watch the State of the Union address on Tuesday, January 25 at 9 pm Eastern (6 pm Pacific)3
1 http://teachingamericanhistory.org/library/index.asp?category=11
2 Brookings Institute, The History of the State of the Union: http://www.brookings.edu/multimedia/video/2011/0121_at_brookings_podcast.aspx
3 www.whitehouse.gov/sotu
