The weather is nice because it’s not too cold, so you can still enjoy being outdoors. The most beautiful part of this season is the changing of the leaves. The colors change as each week goes by. All the leaves together make a beautiful scene. Red, orange, yellow and brown make the fall foliage something worth seeing. In fact, some tourists make plans to come here in the fall because they want to see the foliage. They take drives, take walks, and even take plane rides to see the lovely foliage. I love this time of year.
COMMENT/S:____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Text B:
Fall is beautiful in New England. The weather is nice because it’s not too cold, so you can still enjoy being outdoors. The true beauty of this season is the changing of the leaves. New colors appear as each week goes by. All the leaves together create a lovely and vibrant scene. Red, orange, yellow and brown make the fall foliage something worth seeing. In fact, some tourists plan to come here in the fall specifically for the foliage. They take drives, walks, and even plane rides to view Mother Nature’s art. I love this time of year.
COMMENT/S:____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
WRITING TIPS:
• Don’t repeat a word multiple times within the same paragraph.
• Other forms of a word (example: love – lovely) can be used within the same paragraph, but it’s best if they’re not close in proximity.
• Consider different synonyms for a word you are overusing. Look in a dictionary or thesaurus for ideas. Choose carefully.
• Remember that you do not have to work only with synonyms as single words.
- You can replace a word with synonymous phrase, that is, a group of words. Example: The colorschange as each week goes by. > New colors appear as each week goes by.
- Sometimes the entire sentence structure can be changed. Example: …come here in the fallbecause they want to see the foliage. > …come here in the fall specifically for the foliage.
Writing Task #2:
Rewrite this paragraph to increase its word variety.
Winter in New England is a fun time for children. Unlike adults, who think of sore throats, dangerous road conditions, and frozen pipes, children only think of the fun things they can do. Snow means sled rides. Snow means making snowmen. Snow means staying home from school. I think adults should remember what it's like to be a child. I think the fun times don't have to end once you're no longer a child.
Example:
It is usually boring in the fall. However, people in England are very excited about this season because the weather is not so cold here, and they can enjoy being outdoors. New scenery appears when the leaves naturally change color. Certainly, everyone likes to be there to see the foliage and have barbecues as well. This is an enjoyable time.

Prepared by:
Mrs. Rhina R. Odom
