    • 6. Different Different Same The Treaty of Waitangi – A short version The Queen will protect all Maori and give them the same rights and privileges of British subjects. The British will look after and protect Maori and treat Maori equally as any British person. The British will look after and protect Maori and treat Maori equally as any British person. The Queen will protect all Maori and give them the same rights and privilege of British subjects. 3 Grants Maori full chieftainship (sovereignty) (rangatiratanga) of their lands. The Crown have first offer to buy land, but if they do not wish to, then Maori can sell directly to other buyers. Maori have complete control and authority over their lands meaning that they could have their own laws on their lands. If Maori want to sell land, then they have to offer it to the Crown (the government first). If the government does not wish to buy the land then Maori can sell it to other people. Maori were allowed to keep the land they owned. Maori have to sell land to the Crown (the government) – not anyone else. Grants Maori “full exclusive and undisturbed possession of their lands, and estates, forests, fisheries and other properties.” Only the Crown can purchase land from Maori if they are willing to sell. 2 Maori will give the Queen governorship of their lands – kawanatanga – word made up by Williams The Queen is allowed to set up a government in New Zealand to look after everything. The Queen of England has power and control over everything. Maori will give the Queen “all rights and powers of sovereignty” (highest power) 1 Maori Version Our version Same / Different?
