    6. 6. Captain William Hobson Hobson arrived in New Zealand on the 29 th Jan 1840. Hobson was the governor – his job was to get the Maori chiefs to sign a Treaty with British. A letter of invitation was sent out to Maori to meet with Hobson. PROBLEM: he did not have any examples of how to make a treaty!!! So he called on James Busby… Fill in your history road.
    7. 7. Task 3: What happened on the 29 th Jan 1840? 1840 29 th Jan – Captain William Hobson arrived. He had to make a treaty with Maori. - Chiefs were invited to a meeting with Hobson
    8. 8. James Busby Hobson wrote one draft treaty but… James Busby (he was in charge of making sure the British people behaved themselves) DID NOT think what Hobson had written was good enough. So he changed it. On the 3 rd of Feb 1840, Busby drafted a Treaty. PROBLEM: it’s only in English! So they called on Henry Williams Fill in your history road.

    10. 10. Henry Williams <ul><li>Henry Williams (a missionary) was given the treaty on the evening of the 4 th Feb. The treaty needed to be translated into Maori for the chiefs the next day. </li></ul><ul><li>Henry Williams knew the Maori language well, but really wanted Maori to sign the treaty. He thought it would be best for Maori. </li></ul><ul><li>PROBLEMS: </li></ul><ul><li>Not enough time to translate </li></ul><ul><li>Used Maori words that made it the treaty sound really good for Maori </li></ul><ul><li>No Maori were consulted on the wording. </li></ul>Fill in your history road.
