I have experience working with students from a wide array of grade levels on the athletic field and in the classroom. As a coach, I have shared my expertise with eighth-grade football players for one year and served as defensive coordinator with the ninth-grade squad for the last three. In addition, I have managed the offseason weight room program, which re- quires extensive planning and preparation, for the past four years. The player-coach relationship has helped me develop vital communication and leadership skills. I also possess experience as an athletic administrator. This past year I served as coor- dinator of a football league that consisted of fourth, fifth, and sixth-grade student athletes. As a college student, I assisted a history museum for two years with cur- riculum development for field trips. Interaction with visiting students allowed me to become a teacher before graduating from college. Despite my strong background working with students, I recognize the need for im- provement. I have taken part in several professional development conferences as both a presenter and student. I have aligned myself with organizations such as the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) and the Pennsylvania Council for the Social Studies (PCSS). These groups advocate for social studies education and strive to create better educators. Toward the end of my college career, I took a proactive approach and spearheaded the creation of one of the first PCSS college chapters in the state, UPJ-PCSS. I have exposed myself to a wide array of activities that will not only make me a better teacher, but an even greater person. Instructional
  4. 4. Philosophy: I believe that in order to become a successful social studies educator, I must pre- pare students to become effective citizens in an ever-changing democratic soci- ety. I will employ a variety of teaching methods with a primary emphasis on stu- dent-directed instruction. Moreover, I will not hesitate to combine history, eco- nomics, geography, political science, and other disciplines to create a clearer pic- ture and stimulate higher-level thinking abilities for the students.
