      Lesson 2
L.O- To understand the importance of visuals and lyrics within music video
    • Andrew Goodwin
Suggested several conventions of music videos that the audience should be aware of.
      Thought beats-seeing the sound
      Narrative and performance
      Star image
Relation of visuals to the song
      Technical aspects of music video
    • Visuals and the lyrics
In the lesson today we will be focusing on the connection drawn by Goodwin, between the lyrics of the song and what we see on screen.
By the end of the lesson you will understand the links he suggests between lyrics and visuals
    • What do you mean?
      Visuals
= what we see on screen
      Lyrics
= the words of the song
    • Task- the lyrics
Listen to the following song without seeing the video
Using the lyrics complete the following task:
      Task
Draw a brief storyboard or write a brief description about what you think you would be seeing on screen.
    • The visuals
      Watch the video

      Were you right?
There may be three types of links between lyrics and visuals.
    • Lyrics and visuals
Goodwin suggests that there is a relationship between visuals and the lyrics
      The relationships may be:
Illustrative Images are used to represent the lyrics and genre, perhaps like a metaphor
For example the film we saw before would be an example of illustrative.

    • 2. Amplifying (literally interpreting the words and exaggerating them. Often images are repeated and drummed into the audiences heads )
      New layers of meaning
      may be added to the
      song

If you like it then you should have put a ring on it
    • 3 .Contradicting (opposing the lyrics. The video will have nothing to do with the song) This may also be called disjuncture
The video will have nothing to do with the actual song lyrics and they are not trying to create meaning.

    • Task
Considering the video we previously watched. What style of video would you now suggest that was?
