This is a presentation I gave to the members of the AMA Student Ad Club chapter at St Thomas University in St. Paul, MN. They served chicken wings, which was really nice.

The Story of You (if you're majoring in advertising and marketing at St. Thomas University) The Story of You (if you're majoring in advertising and marketing at St. Thomas University) Presentation Transcript

  • Background image by Lucy Nieto from Flickr via Creative Commons This is the story of you. If you’re an advertising or business major or just happened to find yourself in the John Roach Center at St. Thomas University on September 29, 2009 at Noon Creative Commons Attribution & Non-Commercial License
  • So who are you? 2
  • I’m 42. I started in advertising at age 25, just before email. 3
  • Now I’m the CEO of Hello Viking, an ad agency in Minneapolis. 4
  • I also serve on the MIMA board of directors and teach at MCAD. 5
  • Let’s step back in time. 6
  • 7
  • 8
  • We had words and images. 9
  • A FILM BY DOUG PRAY “Creativity can solve anything.” November 6-13, 2009 Regal Brooklyn Center Stadium 20 6420 Camden Ave. N, Minneapolis 10
  • We had control. 11
  • Then someone invented the Internet. 12
  • 13
  • Data is everywhere. 14
  • Technology empowers. 15
  • The consumer is in control. 16
  • So now we have words+images +technology. This is not sequential. It’s exponential. 17
  • This is your future. 18
  • We still need to sell, to differentiate, to earn allegiance—but in a marketplace where our customers, our partners and our competitors know more, can act faster and have incredible power to help or harm us. 19
  • We still need to advertise when the new definition of advertising includes customer service, talent recruiting, distribution and governance. 20
  • Fortunately, you’re young. 21
  • But here’s some advice. 22
  • Ideas first. 23
  • Just do it. 24
  • Be human. 25
