  1. 1. Imperialism and Colonization by “New Industrial” countries is about… <ul><li>Explaining the main reasons why these countries wanted Colonies and to be Imperialist </li></ul>

National Security <ul><li>In order to remain a strong country, Imperialists believed: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Needed to have a strong industrial economy </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Needed to have a steady supply of raw materials for the industrial economy </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Have a strong military to protect economic interest </li></ul></ul>
  3. 3. Strategic Advantage <ul><li>Imperialist countries did not want other countries to get ahead of them </li></ul>
  4. 4. Nationalism <ul><li>People felt proud when their country ruled a large empire </li></ul>
  5. 5. Social Darwinism <ul><li>Based on Racism: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Europeans believed they were better than the people they colonized/ruled </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>They believed this made it OK for them to rule other people </li></ul></ul>
  6. 6. Missionary Impulse <ul><li>People from European countries wanted to spread their religion to people in other parts of the world </li></ul><ul><li>They also wanted to bring modern inventions and technology to these people to make their lives better </li></ul>
  7. 7. Industrial Economies <ul><li>Europeans wanted to get the raw materials from colonies </li></ul><ul><li>They also wanted to take advantage of cheap labor from the natives in the colonies </li></ul>
  8. 8. Why is this important? <ul><li>This is important because this explains the major reasons the Imperialist countries had for making colonies </li></ul>
