A2 Media Coursework

Chosen Brief: A short film in its entirety, lasting approximately five minutes, which may be live action or animated or a combination of both, together with two of the following three options:

A poster for the film

A radio trailer for the film

A film magazine review page featuring the film

The Short Film I have decided to do a short horror film, looking at genre theory as well as media language. In terms of genre theory, I am planning to look closely at the genre of horror and its conventions, and try and replicate these conventions within my film and the extra tasks. I will also look at media language, taking into account the ideas of denotation and connotation. To do this I want to use lots of features in my film that have two levels of meaning; the denotation and the connotation.
Tasks

For the tasks I have chosen:

The film poster.

The film magazine review page featuring the film.

Within both of these I want to focus on the idea of genre theory and media language, making sure both pieces follow horror conventions and contain imagery with possible connotations to appeal to the audience and for an enigma: this is especially important for the poster.

Ideas For My Short Film Here are some of my ideas for my short film: Storyline The protagonist is a teenage girl with a troubled past. She has had issues at home that drove her to insanity. She looks and acts different, so gets bullied badly at school as well as at home by her abusive father. At the start she is living alone in what looks like a run down abandoned house. We get flashbacks to her past, seeing her as a young child being beaten by her father etc. Eventually we see in the flashbacks, her burning down her house with her parents inside. The bullying at school eventually pushes her over the edge and she starts to take revenge on those who hurt her.
Characters The main character is Crystal. We don’t really find out any more about any of the other characters. She’s 16 and in school. She lived with both her parents until her mother was killed in a car accident when she was three, since then her father was abusive; mentally more than physically, and she became odd and withdrawn. She was bullied throughout her school life because of how different she was. One day she snapped and burned down her house with her father inside; setting it up to look like a kitchen fire. She left, taking with her just her favourite doll: one that belonged to her mother, and lived in an abandoned house. She became even stranger, and the bullying got worse over time. Then, one evening she was chased home by three boys, holding sticks that they’d set alight shouting “witch”. She snapped, and took revenge on the three boys, then set out to seek revenge on everyone else who had hurt her.
My title sequence idea This is an idea I had for the title sequence so did a quick mock up with photo’s from the internet.
Plans For Filming Some of the filming will be domesticated; especially the flashbacks of her past. Some scenes will take place in school and some in various locations like in town. It has to remain realistic as I want the audience to believe this person exists…I don’t think lots of woodland scenes with creepy things happening would be believable as it wouldn’t fit the character or the storyline. I want to have minimal colour as it needs to look creepy and not cheerful, I would consider black and white, but I think I would decrease the brightness and contrast as some colours such as red would be useful. The film will be between 5 and 10 minutes long, I have looked at some short films on You Tube for ideas and many of them are this sort of length.
