Transcript of "Field Assignment 2"

 1. 1. Field Assignment 2
TarynBarbeiro
GEOL-1-C01
Spring 2011
2. 2. Fault
This picture was taken at Parkfield, Ca of the Parkfield bridge that straddles the San Andreas Fault line. Parkfield is known as the “Earthquake Capital of the World” because of its location along California’s San Andreas fault line.. San Andreas Fault exhibit a slow, gradual displacement known as fault creep which occurs relatively smoothly and with little noticeable seismic activity. Other segments slip at somewhat regular intervals producing small to moderate sized earthquakes. The latter process is described as stick slip motion because the fault exhibits alternating periods of locked behavior followed by sudden slippages and release of strain.
3. 3. Weathering Processes
4. 4. The first picture I chose was from a trip to New York City I had taken a couple years ago. I chose to use the picture of the original latern from the statue of liberty because this has to be one of the most famous objects in the world that is constantly getting hit my water, wind, snow and is always going through some weather process whether it be mechanical or chemically. The second picture is chemical weathering. This picture is an example of oxidation. This object was exposed to water for so long it has started to rust.
5. 5. Mass Wasting & Erosion
6. 6. I chose the two pictures for mass wasting and erosion because the first picture if you look carefully (sorry the picture didn’t turn out) the cliff is clearing an example of how the rock and soil are going down slope because of gravity. The second picture is erosion because of the rock that slowly is deteriorating because of the effects of wind and water.
7. 7. Continental
My picture of an example of a continental environment is Shaver Lake which is located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California.
8. 8. Marine
For the marine environment I chose a picture of the Pacific Ocean at Pismo Beach, California.
9. 9. Transitional
The picture I chose to use was a picture of the beach at Pismo Beach. The shoreline is the transition zone between marine and continental environment which would be a beach with deposits of sand.
10. 10. Practical use of Geology
I used a picture of skyscrapers from my recent trip to San Diego for my practical use of geology.
