  2. 2. PHiTS is… • funded under the AHRC Digital Transformations Theme (Big Data) • a 15-month project, running from January 2014 to March 2015 • a partnership with Scottish Language Dictionaries (www.scotsdictionaries.org.uk)

PHiTS: Aims • first stage of project to compile a full Historical Thesaurus of Scots (HTS) • the first thesaurus of Scots to be organised on historical lines • the first comprehensive resource for Scots to be arranged according to synonymy and semantic category • information on over eight centuries of Scottish life as seen through the language of Lowland Scotland

  5. 5. PHiTS (and Starts) Pilot phase will focus on selected semantic and lexical categories, including: • sports and games • food • clothing • weather • idioms and proverbs
  6. 6. PHiTS: Weather forecast Ways to describe SNOW in Scots: • FEEFLE To swirl, as of snow round a corner • FEUCHTER Of snow: to fall lightly, to come down in odd flakes • FLAUCHT A flake, esp. of snow • FYOONACH A sprinkling of snow, as much as just whitens the ground
