In your statement in a slide, i trully agree that 'leadership isn’t just professional; it’s personal' i believe strongly that in order to become successful leader, one have to bring forward his or her personal energy into work, only then can they see how much you actually care for them as a leader. And also be personal when dealing with people.
i also believe that a leader should always set high standards to his followers. and this high standard have to be achievable but needs to put in great effort to achieve. this will, i think, bring the whole team to the next level.

In this slides i learnt how to let your team mates willing to obey you and have the same vision as you. I wondering setting high standards of performance does it means that even i know that my team mates will not be able to do it but i still set such a high target?

I agree with this statement: 'People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.'

How often do we find ourselves in the state of thinking, 'Nobody cares'? And we go on doing our own thing, without caring how much it will affects others. Of course, like what you said, you have to build trust too, and without care, trust can never be built.

It’s important to show your team mates that it’s not ONLY profession but also personal. That’s how you connect and able to communicate better. Relentless communication enhance the team spirit and belief, which usually result in good outcome, isn’t it?

Management by example? I think the gist of what you were trying to say was that if you lead your team by example, it would increase morale, and improve their performance.

And if i were to add, its not nice to call your subordinates 'sheep'. Its disrespectful, and how would you command the respect of your team if you dont show them respect in return?

The part about setting high expectations is rather new to me. I do agree that setting high expectations will encourage employees to work harder as they know that the manager will not compromise . But will there be adverse effects? Some employees may not be able to live up the expectations and this will put unnecessary pressure on them.

From this presentation, I had learnt that being a leader of an organisation, gaining trust and building good relations with employees are necessary. Allow the employees to understand yourself as a manager/ leader, to enhance good relations and communications between one and other. In this way, it will be easier to set high standard and the employees will be willing to follow and achieve. Care for employees and they will care for the leaders as well.

From these slides I have understand chapter3, help your sheep identify with you that as a good leader, we should:
    - Building trust, to earn respect from the follower.
    - Set high standard, be real and present your realself. Give yourself certain standard for follower to met.
    - Communication of values

From all these that have been describe from the slide I understand that people will actually relise the care that the leader given and as a leader you to can feel the different people treating you with certain respect.
As setting example for the follower to follow was important.

Notes on slide 1

Expand based on either  Examples of people who earn respect of followers (like ziceng) or mine (Keann) was more like why you should do it, what happens if you do it, what happens if you don’t. Haha. Up to you! Rawr its quite common sense (: Make it fun haha cuz it’s a slidecast :D

Its all about the heart, taking care of your people. (pause). Okay, look at the pretty picture. Let’s move on.

Without the personal touch, you’ve got nothing

Give example for last point. Say you’re a boss. You take one of your workers out with you to lunch, so you can talk. Chances are, even if he is disagreeing with what you are teaching him (he probably won’t say it because you’re his boss),he’ll remember that you took him out, that you spent time with him, and he’s gonna be more inclined to follow you, and agree with you, next time, because you have bonded. They know you now,and that’s the whole point of this chapter. You can’t do it from far away.

So once again, if you’ve forgotten everything we’ve said, here’s a summary in point form. (Goes through points). Now just remember these,(activate smiley) and you should have no problems trying to get your people to identify with you. We wish you good luck in your people management! Thank you!

  2. The Way of the Shepherd
    • Chapter 3: Help Your Sheep Identify With You
      • Build trust with your followers by modelling authenticity, integrity, and compassion
      • Set high standards of performance
      • Relentlessly communicate your values and sense of mission
      • Define the cause for your people and tell them where they fit in
      • Remember that great leadership isn’t just professional; it’s personal
  3. Build trust with your followers by modelling authenticity, integrity, and compassion
    • Earn the respect of your followers.
      • Once they respect you, they will not hesitate to trust you.
    • By being authentic, having integrity, and being filled with compassion, people will know you mean what you say and that they can depend on you.
    • Being compassionate causes your followers to be more open and accepting of you
      • “ People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care”
  4. Set high standards of performance
    • By setting high standards, your followers will know that you don’t compromise.
    • Setting a standard also gives your followers a guideline of what you expect of them.
      • Increases the efficiency of the followers.
  5. Relentless Communication
    • In the book, it is stated that leaders should “ relentlessly communicate their
    • values and sense of mission ”. This means that leaders have to constantly
    • impress upon their team the personal traits these leaders have that qualify
    • them to lead the team.
    • This is a method that leaders use to ensure that team members know that
    • they belong. They understand what their leader stood for , and they know
    • that they can trust him/her . When a leader is trusted, people are free from
    • fear and more assured , and this makes them more productive as they
    • spend more time on tasks that actually matters to the company.
  6. Relentless Communication
    • Let’s look at a few examples of how
    • leaders constantly reinforce messages:
    • Adolf Hitler: He showed himself as a
    • veteran of WWI and also a saviour
    • who will bring Germany out of the
    • economic crisis.
    • Barack Obama: He reinforced the
    • Idea that he can be trusted through
    • stating his position on various
    • political issues . A slogan of his “Yes
    • We Can” also helps send a
    • message that he will bring change
    • to America.
  7. Defining the Cause
    • It is also stated that leaders should “ define the cause for their people and
    • tell them where they fit in”. This meant that leaders have to communicate
    • the objectives that have to be fulfilled clearly to their members, and make
    • them feel like they belong.
    • This is yet another way through which leaders ensure that their team
    • members recognize why they are in a team. This helps them to understand
    • the aims that they as a team have to achieve.
  8. Defining the Cause
    • One of the ways through which corporations
    • make their employees feel that they belong
    • is through the uniforms . This helps build a
    • greater sense of belonging to the company,
    • and make them aware of the role they have
    • to play as an employee.
Another way is through the use of meetings to define the objectives to be met or assignments to be done. This effectively presents the objectives to the employee in a clear manner . Also, employees will have to be aware of the job scope prior to applying for a position. This helps them understand the unique role they play in an organisation or team.
