The Benefits of All Day Pre-K FOR English Language Learners. • Many students are entering schools ill prepared for today’s academic requirements. • This is a growing concern for teachers when closing the gap of achievement, particula rly for low income and English language learners • Research shows that students who enter kindergarten with preschool experience are ahead in early reading and math skills and that this boost continues throughout their educational career.

The Benefits of All Day Pre-K FOR English Language Learners. • Hispanic children lag behind their white and Asian-American peers at all proficiency levels of reading and mathematics at the beginning and throughout Pre-K – 12. • In order for Hispanic students to succeed in academics, interventions and learning opportunities need to be set in place during the early years. Studies show that Hispanic students benefit from high quality prekindergarten programs
  4. 4. Why Is This Important to Me? CES has seen an increase in the English Language Learners in the past five years. These students are entering kindergarten with a wider range of academic skills.
  5. 5. Hypothesis • The researcher suspects that Pre-K experience contributes to acquisition, or lack thereof, of school readiness for English Language Learners.
  6. 6. Research Question • What is the impact of full-day academic Pre-K programs on English Language Learners’ acquisition of reading/math/social skills upon entering Kindergarten?
  7. 7. Methodology Participants: Students at CES Instrument: AIMSweb assessment tool in reading and mathematics Procedures: Compare gains from AIMSweb
  8. 8. Findings Reading statistically significant (p=.03) On average, ELL students had higher gains.
  9. 9. Findings Mathematics Not statistically significant (p=.9) On average, ELL students had higher gains.
