The Winter Olympic Games is a major
international sporting event that occurs once every
four years under the auspices of the International
Olympic Committee (IOC). Les Jeux olympiques
d'hiver The Winter Olympic Games first took place
in 1924 initially as part of the Olympic Summer
Games.
History Page
2
Until1992, the Winter
and Summer Olympic
Games were held in the same
years, but in accordance with
a 1986 decision by the IOC to
place the Summer and Winter
Games on separate four-year
cycles in alternating even-
numbered years, the next
Winter Olympics after 1992
was in 1994.
The Olympic symbol
The primary symbol of the Olympic Games is composed of five interlocking
rings, colored blue, yellow, black, green, and red on a white field, known as the
"Olympic rings." The symbol was originally designed in 1913 and presented at
the 1920 Summer Olympics by the city of Antwerp (Belgium) by Baron Pierre de
Coubertin, co-founder of the modern Olympic Games. According to Coubertin,
the ring colors with the white background stand for those colors that appeared
on all the national flags that competed in the Olympic games at that time.

In preparation, organizers focused on modernizing
the telecommunications, electric power, and
transportation infrastructures of the region. While originally
budgeted at US$12 billion, various factors caused the budget
to expand to over US$51 billion, surpassing the estimated
$44 billion cost of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing as
the most expensive Olympics in history.
Sochi was selected as the host city in July
2007, during the 119th IOC Session held
in Guatemala City. It was the first
Olympics in Russia since the breakup of
the Soviet Union in 1991. The Soviet
Union was the host nation for the 1980
Summer Olympics in Moscow.
