Why Do We Practice Religion

 1. 1. Why Do We Practice Religion? Who really knows why we do it? What motivates us? Is it our family , our friends , or do we really believe in the practices? Is it all Black & White ? Talya Michon & Max Serfaty
 2. 2. Why?

Question: Why do people believe in religion?

Hypothesis: Most people follow religion because that’s the way they were brought up.

WERE WE RIGHT?

 3. 3. How we did it

Sample population: We chose people at random and asked them to answer our surveys. We also put them online so that anyone who wishes to answer, could.

There was no specific gender , age group , or religion chosen.

 4. 4. Our population

We polled people from many different religions.

What religion were you brought up with?

Agnostic 2% Islam 2%

Baptist 10% Episcopal 2%

Catholicism 8% Judaism 43%

Christianity 14% Methodist 2%

Hinduism 2% Protestant 4%

Roman Catholic 4% None 4%

And 33% of those people are now Atheist

 5. 5. And now?

27% were not still observant of the religion they were brought up with

35% were still observant

38% were still partly observant

 6. 6. Something more?

Do you believe in a supreme being?

35% said no

23% said on a certain level

19% said yes

15% said that there’s something else out there, but not one specific being

 7. 7. That’s how I grew up…

Do you feel religion was forced upon you growing up?

50%: To a certain extent

19%: Yes

17%: No, my family let me make my own choices

12%: No, my parents were not observant

4%: It still is

 8. 9. Who said this?

SO , 73% of people said that religion was forced upon them growing up even a little.

Of those people…

29% were between 13-19

26% were between 20-30

31% were between 31-50

14% were over 50

 9. 10. Atheism

Do you know what Atheism is?

An Atheist is someone who does not believe in theism or deities 1/3 of the people polled said that they were atheist . Of those, 81% say that religion was forced upon them growing up
 10. 11. How much of a role does religion play in your life?

31% are slightly observant

25% say it doesn’t play any role in their life

19% say it plays barely any role in their life

13% are very observant

13% are only observant because their family is

 11. 13. I choose to practice religion because…

30% think we all need a little guidance/restrictions

20% need something to believe in

18% believe it makes us better people

15% say their family wants them to

13% believe in the practices

And 4% said other

 12. 15. I choose not to practise religion because…

26% said it causes too much conflict

23% said they believe in themselves and they don’t need anything else

23% said they don’t like the practices

6% said there are too many restrictions

And 23% said other

 13. 17. Grey Area

With religion, like many other things, it’s not always Black & White.

People are free to have their own opinions, but must let others do the same.

We have found that although, often enough, people really do believe in their religion, it helps to have a little push.

That said, more often than not, the more you push someone to be what you want them to be, the more they will push away.

So, in conclusion, most people wouldn’t follow their religion if they hadn’t been brought up with it, but that’s not why they continue to follow it.
