    • 1. The Journey of a Drop of Water Through a PlantBy: Ta la M a ll i 8C
    • 2. IntroductionWater is one of the most important elements to keep humansand animals alive. However, there is one more specie that can’tlive without it. It is the plant. Having said that, the water has aprocess of how it travels up the plant, feeds it, and gives it thenutrition it needs to survive.
    • 3. Water’s Journey through a PlantStep 1: The water first enters the ground from the rain, and it is absorbedin the direction of the Root hairs. Because they are so fine, they can beeasily absorbed through a process called Osmosis.Osmosis describes how an area of high concentration of water, cantransfer to an area of low concentration.After that, the water drop starts its journey. After entering the root hairs,and the roots, the water continues its way up the plant through a processcalled cohesion.
    • 4. Water’s Journey through a PlantStep 2Cohesion is when the water drops stick together and travel upthe plant through the Xylem tube.Then, the water passes through to the Chloroplasts, and thenthe Spongy Cells, and then the Wax Cuticle feeding each one.Because of the effects, of the humidity, heat, or strong winds,the water escapes through the stomata in the leaf. This is calledTranspiration. The Stomata lets the water out, and the CarbonDioxide in.This causes the water to evaporate into the atmosphere, fallinto the ground and pull up more water up the roots and thestem. This is a process called Respiration.
    • 5. PhotosynthesisRespiration takes place all the time, but Photosynthesis only happensduring the day.Photosynthesis is the process which allows the plant to make its own food.In the leaf, water combines with the Carbon Dioxide in the Chloroplasts,and the energy stored from the light to make Glucose.Photosynthesis equation: Carbon Dioxide + Water (+ light energy) -->glucose + Oxygen or6 CO2 + 6 H2O --> C6H12O6 + 6 O2
    • 6. After PhotosynthesisAfter, Photosynthesis takes place, the plant possesses energy in the formof Glucose; but it also has extra water and oxygen.These can be kept inside the plant to move the Glucose around throughthe Xylem and Phloem tubes.As the water exits the plant from the leaves, new water is absorbed up thestem and into the leaves for Photosynthesis again.
    • 7. Benefits of Water in a PlantPlants need minerals to help them grow. So the water allows the plant totake the minerals from the soil.Water gives the plant and its leaves rigidity and shape. So if the plant islacking water, the leaves begin to wither.
