  • Riches or poverty? see Mk 10:28-29Power or weakness? See 2Co 12:9Popularity or hatred? See Mt 10:22Comfort or a cross? See Lk 9:23Discipleship is a commitment to follow without fear of the temporary costs. Discipleship is a commitment to follow the leadership and direction of Jesus no matter what happens. Discipleship is not a picnic, a snap decision, or an end to troubles. Discipleship is a natural reply to a supernatural, divine invitation.
  • Discipleship is a commitment to follow without fear of the temporary costs. Discipleship desires to attract others to the Master, Jesus but accepts that not all will believe.
  • People do not know what to do with radical life change. “What happened to you?” cynical, skeptical response
  • People don’t know what to do with costly, submissivesacrifice. “I’ll have to give up everything!!” clutching, selfish comfort response cp. Rich, young ruler Mt 19:16-22
  • People don’t know what to do with the gift of free will. “I am in charge of my own destiny” wrong, bad decisions with eternal consequences!!
  • People don’t know what to do without “doing” in their religious practice. “I will please God with my goodness” humanistic, unrealistic view of man Enjoying manipulation-free relationship of grace!! Developing relational connections through spiritual disciplines.
  • People don’t know what to do with just loving God without fear of man. “What will they think of me?” fearful, constricted, controlled response
  • Seeing the signs, they are convinced that this is the Christ, the Son of God (c. Martha –Jn 11:27)Seeing the miraculous effects, they are convinced that they need a change too (c. Jailer –Acts 16:31)They believe, placing their trust in the Resurrection and the Life (Do you believe?)
  • Jn 15:20 – “If they persecuted me, they will persecute you…”
