One of my sweetest morsels was bread soaked in pork gravy.” Gospel of Health, October, 1899. “If in the spring of the year we felt langour (really the result of consuming so much fat and flesh meats during the winter), we resorted to sharp pickles, horse-radish, mustard, pepper, and the like, to ʻsharpen the appetiteʼ and tone up the system. we naturally expected a ʻpoor spellʼ in the spring before we could get newly grown vegetables.” Medical Missionary, December, 1899.

Eat less fine food, eat course food, free from grease and then as you sit at table to eat, you can from the heart ask Godʼs blessing upon the food and can derive strength from course, wholesome food.” Ellen White, Ms 1, 1854

  48. 48. As S and L Proctor wrote in 1991, “The health and life span advantages of the Seventh-day Adventist church have been traced to the way they live and eat. Since the 1800s, Seventh-day Adventists have practised eight secrets of health that reduce their risk of heart disease and cancer ... the two leading causes of premature death.” Continued…

  50. 50. “From a woman named Ellen G White. This visionary said God did not want people to suffer unnecessary illness and death and He inspired her to tell people how they could enjoy maximum wellness. Ellen G White wrote with amazing simplicity and accuracy what has since been proved to be the best formula for health and longevity.” “Searching for the Fountain of Youth.” Hagerstown, Md.: The Health Connection, 1991.
  51. 51. “The work of health reform is the Lord’s means of lessening suffering in our world and for purifying His church.” Ellen G White, Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 9, p 112
  52. 52. “Those who understand the laws of health and who are governed by principle, will shun the extremes, both of indulgence and of restrictions. Their diet is chosen, not for the mere gratification of appetite, but for the upbuilding of the body. They seek to preserve every power in the best condition for the highest service to God and man. The appetite is under the control of reason and conscience, and they are rewarded with health of body and mind. While they do not urge their views offensively upon others, their example is a testimony in favor of right principles. These persons have a wide influence for good.” Ellen G White, The Ministry of Healing, p 319
  53. 53. Dr Clive McCay’s Testimonial “If she merely copied her contemporaries, how did she know which ideas to borrow and which to reject out of the bewildering array of theories and health teachings current in the 19th century? Most were quite irrational and have now been repudiated. She would have had to be a most amazing person, with knowledge beyond her times, in order to do this successfully.” C. McCay, Review and Herald, February 26, 1959

  70. 70. “When the message of health reform first came to me, I was weak and feeble, subject to frequent fainting spells. I was pleading with God for help, and He opened before me the great subject of health reform. He instructed me that those who are keeping His commandments must be brought into sacred relation to Himself, and that by temperance in eating and drinking they must keep mind and body in the most favorable condition for service. This light has been a great blessing to me. I took my stand as a health reformer, knowing that the Lord would strengthen me. I have better health today, notwithstanding my age, than I had in my younger days.” Ellen G White, Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 9, pp 158,159

  73. 73. J N Loughborough “We do not profess to be pioneers in the general principles of the health reform. The facts on which this movement is based have been elaborated, in a great measure, by reformers, physicians, and writers on physiology and hygiene, and so may be found scattered throughout the land . But we do claim that by the method of Godʼs choice it has been more clearly and powerfully unfolded, and is thereby producing an effect which we could not have looked for from any other means.” Continued....
  74. 74. J N Loughborough “As mere physiological and hygienic truths, they might be studied by some at their leisure, and by others laid aside as of little consequence; but when placed on a level with the great truths of the third angelʼs message by the sanction and authority of Godʼs Spirit, and so declared to be the means whereby a weak people may be made strong to overcome and our diseased bodied cleansed and fitted for translation, then it comes to us as an essential part of present truth, to be received with the blessing of God, or rejected at our peril.” J N Loughborough, Review and Herald, August 7, 1866
