Market opportunity for LBS applications is real, especially in the enterprise and consumer navigation application space as shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2.
Industry movements such as Nokia’s acquisition of Navteq for $8.1 billion and Google’s extension of it’s location service to mobile platforms, including its own Android, underscore the seriousness of this opportunity.
Despite this opportunity, only 25% of devices will ship with an in-built GPS chip in 2010. Therefore, there cannot be sole dependence on in-built GPS chips in order for location-based applications to light up.
