- Many companies today are focused on how to minimize their environmental footprint, and they want to know can they utilize software and services to meet their goals in a cost effective manner. We will talk today about how companies, including Symantec, are enabling sustainability through the implementation of technology solutions that allow us to reduce their carbon footprint, increase energy efficiencies and reduce cost. [Provide introductory/context comments regarding Symantec – who we are and what we do “Symantec at a glance”] Event Overview Topic: The Global Highway to Sustainable Business and Economic Development Attendees: Senior level industry executives (our customers), IT companies (our partners), and ambassadors to the UN (approx 150 people total) Format: 30 minute keynote
- Environmental conservation starts with reducing energy consumption. Being a corporate leader comes with responsibilities, but it is also good business, both a way to motivate employees and to add significant value for our customers.
- Page These are the five pillars for a successful reduction of data center energy costs. Manage physical and virtual environments: successfully implement and manage server consolidation, clustering and thin provisioning Stop buying storage: recapture unused storage and scale de-duplication to store one copy Improve power management: Automate power settings and enable thin clients Optimize high availability and disaster recovery including reducing the hardware needed for HA/DR Implement Green IT best practices, including ways to automate compliance, with contributions from partners such as Symantec.
- Page Environment-friendly equipment disposal: Re-deploy devices that have not yet reached their full life cycle and donate end-of life equipment to charity. Reduce the IT footprint: Consolidate data centers, servers, and so on. Engaging employees: Let employees know how they can contribute to our success and do the right thing. Embed environmentally beneficial functionality such as energy and e-waste reduction into computer hardware, software, facilities, and planning More efficiently using energy, materials, and personnel to run computer systems, contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment.
- We are committed to social responsibility and sustainability. Green initiatives saving money while contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment. Symantec has been actively engaged in facilitating, influencing, and promoting Green IT practices since 2006.
- We take a software based approach and have developed practices and software tools that apply techniques such as: Clustering (consolidating machines to use the smallest number possible), storage tiering (only using high-energy, high-performance equipment when necessary), and data de-duplication (eliminating saved versions of the same data) to reduce overall data storage needs. By consolidating and even closing data centers, companies, including Symantec, can conserve energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and save money on IT and real estate expenditures.
- One example of how to follow these best practices to achieve energy savings is our own experiences with data center consolidation. Although the initial goal was financial, the ultimate benefit was also significant efforts towards sustainability.
- This is one example of how to use software to enable sustainability. Save power on desktops with Altiris Client Management Energy consumption by desktops is quite high – there are many desktops that are idle. Not every employees shuts down the desktop when they leave office in the evening. A simple thing that you can do is to set automatic power savings feature. If a desktop is found idling for 15 minutes or so, you can shut it down automatically. Altiris solution from Symantec can help you do this in addition to providing desktop management.
- SNIA: Storage Networking Industry Association AeA Europe – Energy efficiency task force Copenhagen Communiqué on Climate Change – Symantec is one of the signatories as a sponsoring company. Sustainable Silicon Valley's (SSV) Carbon Dioxide Emissions Reduction Initiative Climate Savers Computing Initiative where member companies commit to purchasing energy-efficient PCs and servers for new IT purchases, and to broadly deploying power management. By publicly declaring their support for this important effort, companies demonstrate their commitment to the “greening” of IT Symantec has been listed on the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index for the third year in a row and on the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index for the second year. Symantec is one of only seven US technology companies listed on the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index. The Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) covers the top 10% of the largest 2,500 companies in the Dow Jones World Index in terms of economic, environmental and social criteria. The Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index (DJSI North America) cover the leading 20% in terms of sustainability of the 600 biggest North American companies in the Dow Jones World Index. Green Grid , a consortium of information technology companies and professionals seeking to lower the overall consumption of power in data centers around the globe. Green Grid findings and best practices were shared with the purpose of arriving at a set of metrics and indices which can be formally adopted by each participant organization to improve data center energy efficiency. Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) is a computer industry consortium dedicated to the development and promotion of standards for storage and storage networking, as well as technologies and educational services to empower the IT community. In 2007, the SNIA created two new groups aimed at addressing "green" standards for storage. To help limit our environmental impact in and around our global headquarters in California, Symantec joined the Sustainable Silicon Valley's (SSV) Carbon Dioxide Emissions Reduction Initiative in May 2006. We pledged to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 10 percent at our headquarters facilities by 2010 from a FY07 baseline. UN Global Compact Arm – We support the ten principles of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) and signed the UNGC in 2006. Symantec encourages all companies to adopt the UNGC’s ten principles to protect human rights, uphold ethical labor conditions, preserve the environment, and combat corruption. Symantec serves as a focal point for the U.S. Global Compact Network . We helped plan and organize a human rights-oriented event in April 2008 at the Harvard Business School in Boston, Massachusetts. Approximately 100 executives, civil society representatives, academics, and human rights experts attended the meeting, which marked the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
