2. 1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Our media products consist of a music video, release poster and digipak and they use the typical conventions
of a dance/house music video and they also develop , but does not intentionally challenge the ordinary forms
and conventions of real media products. We looked at various dance videos and anything that was musically
dance or house related as an example for the individual and joint products we created. The forms and
conventions were not challenged because we wanted to make the dance/house genre overtly evident and we
did so with the bright colours and the effects I created while creating these products.
We developed and challenged the fact that I decided to include the DJ in the music video. This is not always
the case with dance music videos, but we still decided to do it anyway so that the audience could identify with
the DJ.
Before we attempted to create these products, we researched the codes and conventions which is shown on my
blog. My aim was to follow the codes and conventions, but it seems I applied part of Goodwin’s theory and I
subconsciously challenged a voyeuristic code and convention which is dance/house music usually having
scantily clad women dancing sexily and seductively in order to attract the male audience. I did not do that
because as this genre of music is about expressing yourself and having fun, having the dancers barely dressed
does not come to mind in order to convey this.
3. 1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
One of Goodwin’s theory was the link between music and
visuals which is what we included.
One verse says,
We made sure to made the
visual interlink with the music.
4. 2. How effective is the combination of your main product
and ancillary texts?
Revised Release Poster Digipak
The use of colour is shown more in the
digipak and poster as they should correlate in
some way because once seeing the poster
should be what you expect to see in the store
you purchase it from.
5. 2. How effective is the combination of your main product
and ancillary texts?
It is evident that we followed the
conventions as we watched many music
videos of this genre. We found that they
are very upbeat and sometimes have an
element of mystery, which is what we
aimed to create.
The main product being the music video,
was an attempt to create a piece that told
a story, but still showed all the
conventions associated with this genre.
We shot the scenes from various angles
in order to have a variety of scenes to
choose from when editing, as it needs to
be fast paced and edgy. We made sure
that the lighting was the utmost best to
convey show our narrative of a journey.
6. 4. What have you learnt from your audience feedback?
Our music video was aimed at students from the age of 14- which is what
we stated in our demographics- and upwards who either go to school or
6th form, though there were a few exceptions to the older audience such as
people in university.
The feedback we received was mostly positive and was constructive
criticism which helped is to improve our music video.
7. 5. How did you use new media technologies in the
construction and research, planning and evaluation
stages?
80s dance music Modern dance music
8. 5. How did you use new media technologies in the
construction and research, planning and evaluation
stages?
We used various types of new media technologies in the construction of researching,
planning and evaluating our product, such as iMacs by the Apple company because it
facilitated us the best as the software was so modern.
In the researching and planning stages of our product we used new medias such as the
world wide web, where we went on various sites such as Wikipedia, Google, YouTube.
We used Wikipedia to research our chosen genre which is documented on my blog. We
used Google as a search engine and we also used it as a calendar to plan our shooting
schedule. YouTube was used for us to see what the videos of our genre looked like from
in the 80s, where we found "The Only Way Is Up" by Yazz and from the new modern
day, where we found, “Memories” by David Guetta and Kid Cudi and it was also used
to find videos to analyse.
We also used Prezi to create ideas and present our finding in a more interactive,
neophilliac way. We also used Microsoft Word and PowerPoint to present findings in
the evaluative stage .
We used Facebook and Youtube to find out what people thought about our video.
9. 5. How did you use new media technologies in the
construction and research, planning and evaluation
stages?
In the process of constructing our music video, we did so through Final
Cut Pro, where we did all our effects and editing. We each did a poster
and a digipak which we created through Photoshop Elements Editor.
Both programmes enabled us to create pieces to the best of our able
knowledge. Final Cut Pro was the hardest to use but once we were
shown, it was really simple from there.
While we were filming, we downloaded the song from a website called
video2mp3.com to our Blackberry Smartphone which enables us to play
the song at our convenience.
10. 5. How did you use new media technologies in the
construction and research, planning and evaluation
stages?
In the stage of evaluation, we used
our Blackberry Smartphone to send a
broadcast to our contacts. Although
we did not get many responses, the
ones we got were good.
Although we got feedback, it was
strenuous to get it from new medias
such as Facebook, YouTube and BBM
because we had to be persistent and
sometimes forceful in getting people
to tell us what they thought about our Overall, the new media really helped us
music video. in making our products the success that it
is.
Editor's Notes
We applied goodwintheory as there is no voyeristictreatmeant of women.
Now there is a clear link between the digipakand poster
The texts are connected because they create the same vision- a feel good type of song. They are similar because the digipak and poster have elements of brightness and so does the video.
Most people had a positive response to it and thought it was ‘very nice’, ‘makes them want to dance’ and tells a story of individuals being brought together through dance.
We used youtube and wikipedia to find out more about this genre
New media such as final cut pro allowed us to make the changes for our music video to run smoothly.
