  • Do you know what’s this? English name?\nWhy we call it that?\nToday I’d like to talk about stripes on zebra.\n
  • When we talk about stripes of zebra, the first question in my mind is:\nIs Zebra “Black with white stripes”, or “White with black stripes”?\nA question like “chicken-and-egg” problem. But it’s really interesting to know.\nLook from outside, there is no difference between the two boxes. \n

  • To answer the question, let’s see how scientist analysis Da Vinci’s painting?\nThey use high tech to analysis the materials used, layers painted, thickness of each layer, and even the order of each single paint. \nIf we can use a similar way to take a look at its growth process, we may find the answer.\n
  • So what would a baby zebra looks like? A zebra mother just delivered her baby, what can we find from the baby? It’s skin color is not so apparent at it’s mother, but we can see clearly that it’s already striped with black and white colors.\n
  • Looks like if we want to get the exact answer, we should go one more step - look at what zebra looks like in mother’s body. \nIt takes zebra mother more than 1 year to pregnant a baby. At first, Everything is black. Then white appears gradually. So if we look from the biology way, zebra is black with white stripes.\n\n\n

  • We all know zebra crossing lines, which is used in traffic to remind driver for crossing people. But imaging zebras wear crossing lines, it’s so obvious in African savannah. So zebra is a kind of “show-off” animal?\n
  • The answer is actually opposite to show off, but rather hide themselves, to their natural enemy - lion. Lions are born achromate, which can not distinguish black and white colors. So the zebras having grass and walking around over there looks no different to those grasses for lions.\n
  • So what should a zebra do when he/she encounter a strong lion? Should it show its muscle by having a 100-metre race with the natural enemy?\n
  • a clever zebra would slow down and jump into his big families, and stay together with his brothers/sisters. If you are a lion could you distinguish who is a single zebra? where is its head? where is its leg? where can I start my first bite? In contrary, a single zebra would be easily catched by the lion.\n
  • It looks as if sitting in a classroom. If everyone is talking with his/he neighbor, or sleeping, or playing with his or her iphone, it’s difficult for the teacher to find someone to shout with. In the contrary, if everyone is listening to the teacher, while you are talking loudly with your girl friend on phone, it’s super easy for the teacher to catch you and having you out of the classroom.\n
  • There is one saying: there is no same leaf in the world. That also applies to zebra. Every zebra has its own style of stripes, which is its the bar code. Meanwhile, every zebra has a pair of scanner as its eyes, which can easily distinguish whether the coming zebra is its honey or its rival.\n\n\n\n
  • A handsome zebra usually wears beautiful stripes, which is clear colored and elegant shaped. And this is a great weapon to the females. There is no need to do any make up, just natural beautiful and healthy skin.\n
  • so many about zebra stripes. But do you know actually the stripy is also related to our design? Do you notice this? And also this?\nUsually in a table/list structure, we can use stripes to distinct different rows, and make user feel every single row as a unit.\n
  • In a hot summer, where there is a strong sunshine, should you wear black shirt or white shirt? Everyone would choose white one. Cause the black one would absorb the light easier than the white one, which would make it super hot for you. So imagine a zebra wearing his half-black skin coat and running under strong sunshine, would it a silly zebra?\n\n
  • Actually zebra is cleaver than any of us. Imagine the black stripe would absorb heat, which would make the air upon it go up. Meanwhile the air upon white stripes would move to the black area. And it finally multiple small fans!! So ladies and gentleman, now you know what you should wear at hot summer?\n
  • What other benefit would zebra get from their stripe appearance? One experiment was taken by scientists to research on escaping from horse flies by skin styles. The scientist made 4 horse models with different skin styles, and paint glue on it. \n
  • Everyday, they would count how many flies was sticked on the model. The result is zebra skin attract least flies compare to other models. We all know the fly would not just suck the blood but also spread disease among animals. Compare to other single-color-skin animals, striped skin would protect zebra from those threaten dramatically.\n
