3. E-learning and pedagogy
Information and communication technology (ICT) has a major impact on the
world in which young people live. Similarly, e-learning (that is, learning
supported by or facilitated by ICT) has considerable potential to support the
teaching approaches outlined in the above section.
For instance, e-learning may:
• assist the making of connections by enabling students to enter and explore
new learning environments, overcoming barriers of distance and time;
• facilitate shared learning by enabling students to join or create communities
of learners that extend well beyond the classroom;
• assist in the creation of supportive learning environments by offering
resources that take account of individual, cultural, or developmental differences;
• enhance opportunities to learn by offering students virtual experiences and
tools that save them time, allowing them to take their learning further.
Schools should explore not only how ICT can supplement traditional ways of
teaching but also how it can open up new and different ways of learning.

Editor's Notes
A brief snapshot of the e-Lead team achievements at MRGS
Why? Challenging and changing world
MRGS’ mandate and responsibility from NZC
e-Learning needs to be underpinned by these key messages.
Some history or MRGS Professional Learning Circles: 2009 e-Learning PLC for 30 teachers, 2010 – ICT Cluster awarded for 3 years PLD2010 1st year, planned to build skills and leadership capacity so that the team would start leading learning in their departments for 2011. They were so enthusiastic that they didn’t wait for 2011, but began leading learning in their depts after 2 terms.The goals for 2011 (on slide)Progress for 2011:- 2011 – highlights – huge contributions to Dept PLDEstablished collaborative space for staff on iLearn (Moodle): e-Learning, Core-Class PLCs, emerging Department development areasHuge uptake and development of i-Learn spaces for studentsEffective use of other tools, (My Portfolio, google-docs, drop-boxes) to enhance student participation, collaboration and conversations.Beginning to explore the Live@Edu suite of applications
So what does this look like?
Intranet Learning and Teaching Space now well-established for staff and students.
A space for teachers – information, resources, forums: for E-Learning for Lead team and all staff
Lead team sharing their inquiries, resources and reflections
Teachers using i-Learn to advance their collaborative and reflective PLD around core classes
Department developing quality unit planning and responsive teaching resources. Beginning to use iLearn, Moodle as a space to share resources, planning and ideas
Unit planning with hyperlinks to resources. A living document.
A bit of everything for students
Juniors will find resources for all their core subjects. Watch the iLearn Juniors tour clip a quick snapshot.
Senior subject pages are being developed for a variety of learning areas. See the video clip iLearn Senior tour for a taster.
Links to student responses and conversations via iLearn in the past few months.Students asking subject specific questions, at all hours, with the ability to embed audio/video content or linksStudents giving feedback about learning activities (and not afraid to mention the frustrations)Students making suggestions, providing links, and encouragement to each otherTeachersresponding quicklyTeachers finding that setting up and having these conversations on Moodle is easier than they thought. Just needed a little support from the a e-Lead teacher to help them get started.
These conversations are also rich evidence of a positive supportive relationship between students and their teachers.
Students contributing learning activities – and you can see that his classmates have viewed this over 100 times
Sharing with the wider community – our inquiries and reflectionsAlison (Science) – Learning objects via iLearn and Digistore pathways
The student voice collected suggests that this is very effective

Student voice collected via My Portfolio, Survey Monkey, Moodle Forums
Evidence of the uptake – 2009 shows the potential
Evidence of growing use of iLearn LMS
As of May 2011 – roll 2200 students, 150 teaching staff
Even I was surprised at the increase … 700 students had used iLearn in 1st week of term 4
An enormous uptake – evidence that staff and students value the learning spaces being developed.
Where to next: Building on current progress – Use of Live@Edu cloud services – shared spaces – able to publishStudent emails – PLD for all staff – continue to spread the knowledgeParent PortalSupport from Edtech to provide both technical solutions and to help develop a strategic plan.
